Tensile strength of the current high strength bolts ranges from 800 and 1,100MPa and the shape of screw thread follows the 1982 ISO specification. Although high strength bolts with tensile strength of 1,000MPa are mainly used in construction site, new high strength bolts with their tensile strength above 1,000MPa are also required for long-span bridge and ultra-thick steel plates. The high strength bolts are often subjected to repeated tension-type of loading in which the fatigue failure is a major mode of failure. The fatigue failure of tension bolt has not been well established. Consequently, in this dissertation, we proposed an advanced screw thread shape by using FEM analysis and also verified the mechanical properties in high strength bolts with tensile strength of 1,300MPa by various tests. Furthermore, we performed a pure tensile fatigue test of high strength bolts under tension and a tensile fatigue test of high strength bolts under prying action, also and estimated fatigue strength of slip-resistant connections with different slip coefficients. We proposed an advanced screw thread shape by using FEM analysis considering a the radius of curvature of nut and clamping depth in the area screw thread as major parameters. It was found that proposed new thread shape has many advantages over the KS shape because of following reasons; lesser stress concentration, lower separation of distance between fastening bolt and nut, effectiveness of stress distribution and improvement of effective area. We evaluated the mechanical properties of high strength bolts with 1,300MPa tensile strength by material test, tensile test, torque test, relaxation test, and slip-resistant connections test. The experimental results conform the requirement of both Korean Industrial Standards and Korean Highway Bridge Specification. It is also verified from the tensile test and torque test that the proposed screw thread shape are superior to the KS shape in tensile strength, elongation, and stress re-distribution. We proposed three fatigue strength specifications by performing 95% survival probability analysis for F8T, F10T, F13T, and F3T-N bolt under 2×10^(6) cycles of repeated loading. It is also found the fatigue strength of advanced screw thread bolts is increased 32.8% when compared with KS bolts. It also addressed that the fatigue strength of high strength bolts is substantially decreased by prying action that can be developed according to the flange thickness and bolt location. Furthermore, we proposed an approximate theoretical formula in terms of prying ratio(Q/T) by regression analysis of theoretical values from AASHTO LRFD Specification and experimental fatigue strengths. If the slip coefficient is greater than 0.4, a fatigue test result satisfied the Category B requirements where the fractures of bolt holes in the main plate are found; if the slip coefficient is less than 0.2, the results do not strength the Category B requirements with a fracture in high strength bolts.
