This study was designed to predict Korean high school students' difficulties in using of English relative pronouns and analyze their errors, and suggest effective teaching tips on English relative pronouns. In order to achieve these goals, some theories on error analysis was reviewed and the characteristics of English relative pronouns were examined. Then, the types and usages of English relative pronouns in current high school English textbook were investigated. For this study, 22 questions were given to 108 first-grade students at J girls' high school and their errors were divided into 4 parts: types, deletion, restrictive function and understanding of the context. An effort was made to examine the errors and find reasons why students commit errors in the use of relative pronouns. The results of the study are as follows: First, the analysis of high school English textbooks shows that not all types of relative pronouns are equally dealt with. Particularly, whose was used only 3 times in 4 high school English textbooks, and the error analysis also showed that students have the most difficulty with whose. It indicates that in the current English textbooks, the less a relative pronoun used is, the more mistakes the students make in its use. Second, the analysis of deletion errors of relative pronouns shows that students have the most difficulty with the subjective relative pronoun + be deletion rule. Of the total 108, the number of the students who fail to delete the subjective relative pronoun + be was 59(54.6%). Third, the degree of students' understanding about restrictive relative pronouns was examined by analyzing the number of correct answers. Last, of the total 108, the number of students who said the use of the context-related relative pronouns was most difficult was 41. The results seemed to be caused by their too much reliance on grammar-translation. In order to help students use relative pronouns correctly, it is of necessity to teach them the relative pronouns in connection with the context in which they occur. This study suggests it is important for the students to be exposed to various types of relative pronouns in order to improve their overall English proficiency. This meaningful result will help many English teachers teach English relative pronouns effectively and improve students' grammar skills.
