고등학교 영어 교과서와 대학수학능력시험 외국어(영어) 영역에 나타난 관계부사 사용에 관한 코퍼스 기반 연구 A Corpus-based Study on the Use of Relative Adverbs in High School English Textbooks and the English Section of the College Scholastic Ability Test원문보기
동시에Longman Spoken and Written English(LSWE) Corpus를 기반으로 한 Longman Grammar of Spoken and Written English(LGSWE)의 관계부사 부분을 선행연구로 참고하고 원어민 코퍼스인 Corpus of Contemporary American English(COCA)의 다양한 검색 기능을 이용하여 결과를 추출한 후, HSETC와 CSATC에서 나타난 관계부사와 관련 항목들의 빈도 및 사용양상과 비교하였다. 본 논문의 주요 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 기본 빈도에 있어서 LSWE Corpus의 경우 where가 압도적으로 더 많이 사용되고 있고 HSETC와 CSATC의 경우 관계부사 where > when > why의 순위를 보인다. 둘째, where의 경우 COCA, HSETC, 그리고 CSATC 모두 place(s)가 가장 높은 빈도로 사용되며 선행사가 존재하는 where의 빈도가 선행사가 생략된 where보다 압도적으로 많다. 선행사가 생략된 where의 경우 this, that, 그리고 it 등의 지칭어를 주어로 취하면서 보통 be동사 뒤에 등장한다. where가 비제한적으로 쓰이는 경우는 전후 문맥상 선행사가 이미 특정되어 청자가 화자가 공유하는 구정보의 성격을 띠고 화자가 전달하고자 하는 추가적인 내용이 신정보로서 중요한 의미를 갖게 될 때 많이 등장하였다. 셋째, when의 경우 COCA, HSETC, 그리고 CSATC 모두 선행사 time(s)이 가장 높은 빈도를 보이고 있다. time(s)이 생략된 경우는 when이 that, this, 그리고 it등을 주어로 취하면서 보통 be동사 뒤에서 새로운 정보를 제시하는 기능을 하고 있다. when이 생략된 경우는 by the ...

COCA에서 where를 대신하는 that은 거의 사용되지 않고 있었고 오히려 that이 관계대명사로 기능하면서 전치사를 후치시키는 구조가 많았다. 일곱째, 복합관계부사의 경우 COCA, HSETC 그리고 CSATC에서 whenever의 빈도가 가장 높고 wherever가 그 다음으로 출현하였다.??no matter ~??구조에서는 no matter how가 압도적으로 많이 사용되고 있으며 no matter when 구조는 거의 사용되지 않고 있었다. 마지막으로??전치사+which??의 경우 COCA, HSETC 그리고 CSATC에서 way(s) in which가 가장 높은 빈도로 사용되고 있으며 학술에서 가장 많이 사용되고 있었다.??명사+at/on+which??

This study is a corpus-based analysis of relative adverbs in high school English textbooks and the English section of the college scholastic ability test. It delves into the frequency and the use of relative adverbs and their pertinent details in both high school English textbooks and the English section of the college scholastic ability test. It also verifies whether they are sufficiently authentic when compared to those in corpora used by native speakers. For this study, the reading parts of two objects were computerized each as a corpus and the concordance listings generated by WordSmith Tools 5.0 were analyzed. The analysis of relative adverbs and their relevant items was carried out depending on the data extracted from the following three corpora: a) Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA), b) a corpus of 37 high school English textbooks in Korea (HSETC), and c) a corpus of the English section of the college scholastic ability tests administered between the years of 1994-2012 (CSATC). Furthermore, Biber et al.(1999), a study on the Longman Spoken and Written English(LSWE) Corpus, was referred to as a precedent corpus-based study on relative adverbs. The main results and findings of this corpus-based study on relative adverbs are as follows: First, where is used with overwhelming frequency in LSWE Corpus. In HSETC and CSATC where is used most frequently, followed by when and then why, which is the least used of the three. Second, place(s), an antecedent of where, is used most frequently in COCA, HSETC and CSATC and the frequency of where which has an antecedent is much higher than that of where which doesn't. Where when omitting its antecedent often appears after be verbs with demonstrative pronouns such as this, that and it as subjects. Non-restrictively used where appears after an antecedent mainly when its antecedent is already specified and speaker and listener know its existence as a given information and need both additional and significant information as a new one. Third, time(s), an antecedent of when, is used most frequently in COCA, HSETC and CSATC. Omitting its antecedent frequently, when emerges after be verbs with demonstrative pronouns such as this, that, and it as subjects. In the case of??when omission??the forms such as by the time, every time, (the) first time and (the) last time appear quite frequently. In this case, the adjectives showing an ordinal and an order like next, first and second etc., are seen in front of time(s). Fourth, why with reason(s) omitted has its dominant place in COCA, HSETC and CSATC. In reason(s) why, particular adjectives such as two, three, and all etc., mostly restricts the meaning and range of reason(s). Fifth, the frequency of way(s) is overpoweringly higher than that of how and how incompatible with way appears mainly in the form of 'this / that / it / here be how~' Sixth, way(s) that is used most frequently in COCA, HSETC and CSATC. That considered to be used instead of where with place, its antecedent appeared very little in COCA, and never emerged in both HSETC and CSATC. Rather, that, a relative pronoun, is used frequently with a preposition at the end of the sentence involved. Seventh, when it comes to compound relative adverbs, whenever is used most frequently, followed by wherever in COCA, HSETC and CSATC. With regards to no matter wh-structure, no matter how is used overwhelmingly frequently but no matter when is used very infrequently. Lastly, in the case of a preposition+which way(s) in which is used with the highest frequency, especially used the most in the academic field. Reason(s) for which is scarcely used in COCA, and never reveals its existence in HSETC and CSATC. Based on the results and findings above, a few points are suggested as follows: First, the various and authentic examples with relative adverbs drawn from corpora with the real language data need to be presented to learners. Second, the diverse patterns of relative adverbs in different textbooks need to be presented systematically and gradually with the consistent frequencies. Third, the use of important grammatical patterns including relative adverbs, needs to be proportionately reflected within each sentence of the reading portion in the English section of the CSATC. This will aid teachers in their ability to utilize them as a reference for grammar teaching in class. Finally, when it comes to making textbooks and materials to help learners use and utilize relative adverbs, writers and teachers should take into special consideration the results and findings of the use of relative adverbs revealed by the comparison of the frequency and the use of textbooks with those of real data in corpora.
