Synthesis of methanol from syngas(H2, CO and CO2) using commercial catalyst has been carried out to investigate the effects of reaction temperature, operating pressure, H2/COx ratio, CO2/(CO2+CO) ratio and space velocity on the selectivity and yield of methanol in a high pressure fixed and fluidized bed reactor. In the case of fixed bed reactor, maximum yield of methanol appeared at around 250℃ and the increase of operating pressure increased the methanol yield. Also, optimum value of H2/COx and CO2/(CO2+CO) ratio were about 2.33 and 0.1 and methanol yield increased with increasing space velocity up to 12,000ℓ/kg/hr and then decreased with the increase of space velocity. In the case of fluidized bed reactor, methanol yield decreases with increasing gas velocities due to the formation of bubble in the bed. At this time, maximum yield of methanol in fixed bed reactor was 11.2%, and maximum yield of methanol in fluidized bed reactor appeared by 10.3%. Also, the effects of pollutants(H2S, NH3) on methanol synthesis have been investigated. H2S reduced methanol yield to 0.6% and NH3 has not effect on methanol yield in the fixed bed reactor. Removal of pollutants reaction using CaO/γ-alumina has been carried out in a fixed bed reactor. The optimum condition for H2S removal is around 20wt% CaO/γ-alumina(1000℃) at 500℃. At this condition, removal was about 0.0187g-H2S/g-CaO. Finally, maximum methanol yield(11.2%) could be obtained after removing pollutants using 20wt% CaO/γ-alumina. However, methanol yield decreased to 2% without adsorbents due to poison of catalysts.
