Pattern is a key concept both in mathematics and art. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of integrated art and math lessons on young children's understanding of pattern. The present study was designed (a) to examine if there is a significant improvement in the behaviors of extending, extrapolating, translating, describing, and making patterns, (b) to examine if there is a significant improvement in the understanding of relational, geometric, and physical patterns, and (c) to examine how the pattern cores are changed in making patterns as a result of the integrated art and math lessons The subjects of this study were 56 five-year-old children who were selected from two kindergartens in Seoul. They were assigned either to the experimental or control group. The experimental group (n=28) received 13 integrated art and math lessons for 6 weeks. Each lesson was planned as a hands-on manipulative art experience based on the concept of pattern, allowing the children to visualize the application of that concept. Children's understanding of pattern was measured at the pre-and the post-test by the Pattern Task developed by the researcher, which was based on the study of Nam(2000). Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics and independent t-tests. The results were as follows : First, children in the experimental group showed a significant increase in pattern task scores after the integrated art and math lessons. Especially, the children's abilities to translate, describe, and make patterns were significantly improved. Second, children in the experimental group showed a significant improvement in the understanding of relational, geometric, and physical patterns. The geometric pattern appeared to be the easiest task for the children, then the physical pattern and the relational pattern. Third, children in the experimental group tended to make patterns in more various ways than those in the control group. The experimental group used many kinds of pattern cores for making patterns.
