Landscape and Tradition of Korean Contemporary Poetry ― Focusing on Poems of Jung, Ji-yong and Jo, Ji-hoon Kim, Mun-joo The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the world of poetry occupied by Jung Ji-yong and Jo Ji-hoon, to shed light on the landscapes shaped in their poems, to analyze the natural landscapes appearing in the poems of both poets particularly near the end of Japanese occupation, and to elucidate the traditional character of these poems. Through the course of these inquiries, it is my intention to illuminate the metamorphosis of Jung Ji-yong and Jo Ji-hoon''s poetry from the standpoint of a discovery of tradition and deepening it. The reason why I examined the poetry of Jung Ji-yong and Jo Ji-hoon from the perspective of landscape is because a change in their perspective of perceiving world is revealed by their poems and because I believed that the world view shaped in their poems shows the path of contemporary Korean poetry has taken. This is a task to show the characteristics and difference of objects called ‘traditional''. In order to do this, I examined the concept of landscape in their poems form an analytical perspective. Additionally, I organized ‘yi jing(意境)’ concepts being used to translate ‘image'' in order to elucidate the character of what is called ‘Oriental landscape'', being shaped in heterogeneous ways and calling different effects from Western ‘image''. I referred to ‘image'' and ‘yi jing(意境)’ from the perspective of elucidating the heterogeneity of scenery rather than applying them as direct method of analyzing landscape. Chapter 2 carefully inspected the metamorphosis process of Jung, Ji-Yong''s poetry by dividing it three ways:beginning, middle, and end, considering as a standard the period when Jeong Ji-yong''s ‘religious poems'' are centrally represented. Section one analyzes the early poems which satisfactorily show the process of things'' being converted to the world of object. Early poems are shaped in the way that the existence of the subject is perceived vividly. Things are shaped in the way of actively manifesting the sensibility of the subject and the subject''s emotion is not expressed directly, but is materialized. A sense in the early poems is part of a subject, aware of things and things receive meaning through the subject''s sense and become a part of landscape. The world of early poems is the world represented by the subject that experiences the real world, and in fact, is the world comprised by objects and subjects represented in that way. Section 2 analyzes poems from the middle period. Different from the poetry of the early poems that sensually perceive the real world of ‘the present-here'', poems from the middle period display a particular interest in fatigue on reality, critical self-introspection, as well as the unseen world. Life of physical desires and the world of aesthetic senses become the general objects of reflection. Accordingly, with striking and original similes or sensuous descriptions being weakened and symbolic words coming into poems, language expressions are changed in the way that the inner world is directly described. Different from the early period when things are subjectified according to the subject, in poems around this period, there arises a critical distance between subjects and objects. As a critical distance arises between subjects and the world, the world of objects, rather than being accepted by real world senses, are self-examined by the consciousness of the subject. The sufferings appearing in poems of this period, though regarding the physical senses as a basis of consciousness, originate from the consciousness of the poet thinking the fundamentals. Section 3 analyzes poems form the late period. The later poetry of Jung, Ji-yong combines early and middle period poetry through the traditional notion of nature. The world, in later poetry, while it exists independently outside the subject, functions as a space for the subject to think. The senses in Jung, Ji-yong''s poetry changes from senses that manifest the subject to senses that experience objects. So called Oriental notion of nature that stands out clearly from later period poetry, is an important result in the aspect that it discovered the language that liberates objects from subjects. Additionally, that world takes the characteristics of responding to reality as a space thinking the problems of reality. In the calm and tranquility of nature, the poet discovers the landscape that can transverse the oppression of reality. The awareness of death that appears in the later works is to internalizes the world of solitude the so called Oriental nature evokes and is the expression of consciousness to negates the self. Nature in the later works is the landscape as a method the pained soul has found. Chapter 3 divides the poetry of Jo Ji-hoon into three periods based around the as a standard, and examines the process of metamorphosis of his poetry world. The first section analyzes the period of etude and the first period. The poetry of Ji-hoon fundamentally affected from his experience with Western literature, rather than treating the real world as objects, begins with the universal problems of human beings as a subject. Physical senses and religious self-consciousness being mixed with the aestheticism of literature, his works from period of etude takes the appearance of conceptual and self-dissociation by immature and conflicting impulses are being combined. In period of etude, steeped in Western notions, an important transition was his interest in nationalism and through this, Jo, Ji-hoon was able to unify aesthetics of literature and the real life. The landscape of poetry that has shaped the aesthetic mentality and sentiments inherent in the life of Korea is the concrete and aesthetic world discovered in real life by the poet hesitating in an idealistic world. Section 2 analyzes the works from the period up until liberation. The natural landscape appearing in these collections is the object of specific contemplation and also is a world evoking fundamental order. These poems do not attach weight to linguistic rhetoric, but present physical possessions as specific images, and are shaped in the way of creating meaning beyond expressed language. Zen, a poetic device used in these poems, goes beyond forms, logic and embellishment and shows the world of language evoking extraordinary meaning through common and simple landscape. The discovery of language of Zen that leaps to dynamic meaning as a image of things is the creation of a symbolic world where create deep meaning in simplicity and meaning beyond language. Collections after this period shows the process of internalizing universal principles formed in the collections of the period into the poet''s sensitive personality. Near the end of the Japanese occupational period, the poet contemplated the phenomenon of terminating life with deep sadness, and ultimately accepted that as his own fate. Section 3 analyzes collections following liberation. While passing through the latter end of Japanese occupation and liberation, Jo, Ji-hoon''s poetry discovers the life consciousness of the individual. And through this life consciousness, the poet discovers the will of the subject united with the universal principles. As the Korean War passes, this consciousness develops into a subjective emotional life originating from within ones self. The life awareness consistent throughout Ji-hoon''s poetry world were the moral principles of life that fundamentally unite all living things in the universe and it had within it, the emotion of compassion that could be shared with the other. An attitude of contemplating both fate and will of the subject together was based on the perspective of seeing life, reality, and history throughly. The subject''s will of life appearing commonly from the collections around this time period takes the characteristics of the morals of duty not looking fatalistically on the dismal reality of history. And as this attitude operated strongly, the language of his poetry came to inherit this narrative quality as well. Chapter 4 explains the attributes of natural landscape shaped in the later poems fo Jeong Ji-Yong and the poetry of Jo Ji-hoon and examines the historical and literary meaning therein. Showing a distinct self-consciousness about the objective world, their poems breaks away from the stage of understanding the world romantically and attain a state of thinking objects more intelligently. Their nature, while a world independent from subjects, is a place of thinking where the problems of subjects are reflected on. Here, so called Oriental Nature provided a way to perceive and shape objects as themselves. This was the discovery of the method of expression that the meaning of objects is not formed in expressed language but formed through the interaction among things presented objectively. These are not merely problems of expression, but are related to the change of thinking that perceives the world. The emergence of landscape, perceiving nature as objects of contemplation attached to subjects but thinking and shaping it as an independent world is a natural phenomenon renewed by the modern subject. The nature discovered by Ji-yong is the object he specifically experienced as an individual. and is a world shaped by evoking traditional notions of nature. The importance of this lies in the discovery of language that rouses traditional notions of nature. The nature that has changed into the space of meditation and contemplation by being liberated from the subject while formally evoking the notion of Oriental world, was the world contemplated sensuously by the subject and also the world of heterogeneous objects existing outside the subject. In the traditional notion of nature shaped by Jung, Ji-Yong, Jo, Ji-hoon incorporated the world view that passing through life, living and reality. In Jo, Ji-hoon''s poetry, traditional thinking, corresponding to the notion of Oriental nature practically perceived by existential individual has deepened. While Jung, Ji-Yong''s poetry shows the landscape that the existence of the modern subject as a center of the universe vividly perceived, the poetry of Jo, Ji-hoon shows the process that traditional world view is carved and deepened in the life and consciousness of the individual. The real Oriental nature that has passed the modern period is created by the world view of including and uniting nature, life and reality is added to the traditional notion of nature discovered by Jung, Ji-Yong. Jung, Ji-Yong''s poetry, developed in the direction of liberating things from subjective objects to their own world, was the point of contact where modern language and Oriental world met. As poetics of life putting human beings and nature together, Jo, Ji-hoon''s poetry, shaping traditional thinking on the basis of the traditional notion of nature, suggests a fundamental direction to eco-poetics forming a important flow of poetic history of Korea and shows the possibility that Korean contemporary poetry and traditional thinking could encounter. Additionally, Jo, Ji-hoon''s poetry sets a contemporary model of traditional poetics in the fact that it is the poetic of life not separated from the reality and that in full-scale, it has shaped the process that the traditional spirit of poetry is being carved into the consciousness and life of the individual through the whole period of his poetry. By Jung, Ji-Yong and Jo, Ji-hoon, the notion of tradition in Korean poetry could have width and depth.
