The purpose of this thesis is to analyze a character, Blanche, and her illusion represented in A Streetcar Named Desire. First I introduce the autobiographical elements of Tennessee Williams expressed or hinted in the play. Secondly, I describe the historical background of the South, which is the setting of the play. On the basis of these autobiographical and historical backgrounds, I mainly compare Blanche the character to its author, Tennessee Williams in terms of the illusion both the character and the author have sought in their lives. Also I examine the play in relation to the circumstances of the South before and after the Civil War. The South was a society based on agricultural industry by slavery. As the North defeated the South, however, the circumstances of the South were radically changed by the abolition of the slavery and the collapse of the noble class society. As the industrialization of the North surged into the South, the South was industrialized by the modern civilization and thus lost its previous pastoral and romantic scenery. The former antique spiritual culture was transformed into the new one, so-called an excessively materialistic culture. This led to the real conflict between both the spiritual and the material among those who lived in the South after the war. Especially, it was very difficult for the noble in the South to adapt to the suddenly changed circumstances. Blanche was trying to stick on the old tradition rather than adapt to the new industrial circumstances. Since the realities of life were too hard, it was really hard for sensitive people such as Blanche (and Tennessee Williams) to adapt to the new harsh reality. The more those Southern men and women have spiritual difficulties adapting to, the more they tended to depend on illusion or nostalgia for the past times. The romantic and elegant Southern tradition was gradually fading away with the advance of materialism. Such stern realities of life led the heroine, who have kept on illusive living in this play, to a tragic conclusion. This thesis analyzes this tragic process Blanche has undergone in the materialistic society through her entire dependency on romantic illusion about reality and nostalgia for the past.
