The purpose of this study was to identify the difference in both the separation time of umbilical cord and the skin condition of periumblical area in accordance with natural dry and alcohol swab. This study was carried out with 191 healthy newborns of F General Hospital located in D city, Korea, from July 15 to November 14, 2005. The natural dry group was dried out without taking any action, and the alcohol swab group was swabbed with alcohol once every day until umbilical cord was separated. Then, the separation time of umbilical cord and the skin condition of periumblical area were observed after separation. The data were analyzed by SPSS program. Also, general characteristics and homogeneity were tested by using a χ²-test and t-test, the difference in separation time by a t-test, and the difference in the skin condition of periumblical area by a χ²-test, respectively. ─────────── * A thesis submitted to the Council of the Graduate School of Kyungpook National University partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Nursing Science in December, 2005. The results of this study were as follows ; 1. It was shown that the average separation time of umbilical cord was 145.03±51.352 days, and that there was no a significant statistic difference in the separation time between the two groups; 138.51±47.509 hours for the natural dry group and 151.55±55.195 hours for the alcohol swab group (t=1.749, p=.082). 2. There was no a significant difference in the skin condition of periumblical area between natural dry group and alcohol swab group the after the separation of umbilical cord. Abnormal skin condition after umbilical cord separation was found in 25patients (13.0%). Such skin condition was found without significant difference first day after umbilical cord separation between the Natural dry group(17.4%) and Alcohol swab group (8.6%) (χ²=3.208, p=.073). It showed no significant difference, on the second day of umbilical cord separation, between natural dry group (2.0%) and alcohol swab group (2.2%)(χ²=.003, p=.958). In conclusion, the effects of the natural dry on both the separation time of umbilical cord and the skin condition of periumblical area were same result as that of the alcohol swab so that the natural dry could be used for practices of umbilical cord care in newborns. In doing so, moreover, it could be possible to reduce the chances of alcohol swab and prevent newborns from being harmed by the alcohol swab.
