특별히 그 영향이 크게 나타났던 것은 Heat shock Protein-16.1, Metallothionein-2, Cytochrome p450 familyprotein 35A2, Glutathione S-transferase-4, Superoxid dismutase-1, Catalase-2, C. elegans p53-like protein-1과 Apoptosis enhancer-1이다.

The toxicity of cadmium, lead, chromium, and arsenite on Caenorhabditis elegans was investigated to identify sensitive biomarkers for environmental monitoring and risk assessment. Lethality, stress-related gene expression, growth, and reproduction were estimated as toxic endpoints. The possibility of regarding C. elegans as a biosensor for environmental toxicity monitoring was also tested, using a green fluorescent protein transgenic nematode. The 24-hr LC50s of cadmium, lead, chromium, and arsenite in k-media were 846, 34, 115 and 92 mg/L, and that in artificial soil were 94, 4.5, 11.6 and 3.2mg/kg, respectively Cadmium exposure led to an increase in the expression of most of the genes tested. The degree of increase was more significant in heat shock protein-16.1, metallothionein-2, cytochrome p450 family protein 35A2, glutathione S-transferase-4, superoxide dismutase-1, catalase-2, C. elegans p53-like protein-1, and apoptosis enhancer-1 than in other genes. The lead-, chromium-, and arsenite-exposed nematode, on the other hand, showed little gene expression change. Alterations in growth and reproduction were observed in cadmium- and chromium-exposed worms. To consider transgenic nematode a biosensor for toxicity monitoring, the responses of stress-related gene promoters must be screened with the use of a broad range of chemicals. The overall results indicate that the stress-related gene expressions of C. elegans have considerable potential as sensitive biomarkers for environmental toxiity monitoring and risk assessment.
