Data collection was conducted with medical workers at K Medical Center and G Hospital in Seoul, Korean oriental medicine doctors in Seoul, all of whom understood the purpose of the study and give informed written consen, from September 20 to October 10, 2004. For data analysis, a frequency analysis was carried out to determine general properties of subjects, along with a chi-squared test to examine awareness differences by the type of occupation. This study obtained the following results. First, as for awareness of alternative medicine, 94.4% were aware of alternative medicine and 49.1% had gained their awareness through media, such as newspapers, TV, and magazines. The majority of subjects had therefore acquired information on alternative medicine through non-professional channels. As for the benefits of alternative medicine, 45.4% defined an alternative therapy as a therapy expected to produce positive effects as a supplementary means for hospital treatment. while 28.7 % were motivated to use it because it seemed to obtain psychological and emotional relief. As for the role of alternative medicine in treating diseases, 55.8% saw them as supplementary therapies. By occupation, 94.0% of all Korean oriental medicine doctors saw them as therapies, showing a statistically significant differences (p=0.001). In addition, 66.3% thought that alternative medicine could be applied to chronic pain and musculoskeletal system disorders and 96.0% of all herbalists answered that such therapies could also be used in treating cancers. As for the problems of alternative medicine, 46.6% answered that it was impossible to predict side effects. 78.8% saw the joint use of hospital treatment and alternative medicine as a desirable method of treating diseases. By occupation. 48.0% of all doctors saw hospital treatment as desirable, showing statistically significant differences (p=0.001). Second, as for experiences and attitudes toward alternative medicine, alternative medicine used within the previous two years included herb medicines and restoratives 39.9% and acupuncture, yellowish swelling, and moxa cautery by 23.3% of respondents. Purposes for which alternative medicine were used included promotion of health and restoratives by 39.9% and treatment of musculoskeletal system disorders by 28.8%. In addition, 61.8% had used alternative medicine for less than 6 months and 34.5% had spent less than 500,000 won on alternative medicine. As for clinical results, 39.4% were generally satisfied with the results from alternative medicine, 60.0% experienced almost no side effects after the use alternative medicine, 59.2% had effects on alternative medicine for themselves, and 59.9% wanted to continue to undergo alternative medicine.
