The image industry is reaching the peak of its development in Korea. Inparticular, a TV drama entitled "Winter Sonata" was really a success in Japan and brought a great quantity of profit to Korea a few year ago. This incident has awakened Koreans to the profitability of the drama industry, aroused the interest of many investors in the industry, and established the foundation for a success of the industry. Against the said situational background, this study is aimed to analyze the factors which create successful derivative commodities of TV dramas. In other words, the present author investigated with which factors dramas could be an industrial success and in which relationship dramas would highly probably be a success. To do that, the dramas aired on TV between 2002 and 2004 were collected in order to secure basic materials for this study. 88 dramas selected from the collected materials could be converted into relevant data and contributive to this study. After selecting dramas, general materials of each of the dramas were examined including audience rating, broadcasting time, broadcasting period, and broadcasting subject matter. These factors were considered to play an important role in making a drama a success and could be converted into such data as might relatively objective reference criteria. First of all, an investigation was conducted into all the 88 dramas to determine their first audience rating, average audience rating, and last audience rating. And depending upon the time of the broadcasting, dramas were classified into Monday and Tuesday dramas, Wednesday and Thursday dramas, weekend dramas, daily dramas, and morning dramas. Next, dramas were referred to as short-term ones when they were broadcast for one - three months, mid-term ones for four - seven months, and long-term ones for more than seven months. Lastly, broadcasting subject matters were divided into five types such as family/home, youth/melo, women/couple, complex melo, and historical/ costume piece dramas. These types were established as independent ones and employed as criteria for the results. The result values of the aforesaid derivative commodities include the drama OST sales volume, the number of time swhen talents created advertisements, and the number of the companies supporting the production of the dramas. These three values were used as dependent variables in this study and their mutual connection was reviewed. The following facts were found from the analysis of the correlation between the said drama factors and the derivative commodity groups. First, in general, most of the dramas whose audience rating was high were a success and the OST sales volume and the number of advertisement creation were especially great when the audience rating was high in the last stage of the dramas. Furthermore, when the audience rating was high in the initial stage, it was also high on the average and in the last stage as well. In the meanwhile, Monday and Tuesday dramas showed static correlation with their OST sales volume and number of advertisement creation and Wednesday and Thursday dramas with their support for the production. Short-term dramas had high result values in their OST sales volume and support for the production. As for broadcasting subject matters, youth and melo dramas had high result values in their OST sales volume. Another thing to note in this study is support for the production of dramas, which was decided before the broadcasting. Many companies support the production of the dramas whose audience rating, the companies expect, will be high. However, it is strange that this study could not prove the correlation between support for the production and the audience rating. It implies that what is expected shall not all coincide with the results and that the success of a drama cannot be always guaranteed by the talents and background, which are considered to be major decisive factors supporting the production of dramas. But static correlation was identified among the OST sales volume, the number of advertisement creation, and support for the production. That is to say, it was proved that the success of one would lead to the success of the others in a row. Based on the above-mentioned observations, this study found that such factors as audience rating, broadcasting time, broadcasting period, and broadcasting subject matter had some in fluence on the success of a drama. After these factors were comprehensively considered, it can be said that a drama is relatively and highly probably to be a success in case its audience rating is high, it is broadcast on Monday and Tuesday, and it is a short-term youth or melo drama. Such findings can be applicable to the production of dramas in the following ways. First, a story should be composed in such a way as the audience rating may be increased in the last stage. Investigation results show that the audience rating in the last stage is in static correlation with derivative commodities, which means that the last stage impresses the viewers more than any other stages and that, in that case, it is highly probable for the derivative commodities to be a success. Second, a different expenditure structure needs to be set up in compliance with the period when dramas are aired. In order to create profits corresponding to investments, the one-source multi-use strategy should be employed to diversify profits through the rapid development of various strategic commodities and the planned creation of derivative commodity groups so that investments may be intensively made in short-term dramas. In planning derivative commodities, the business efficiency can be enhanced through hammering out strategies along with diverse firms in such an active manner as to create investments and demands. Third, there is high static correlation between derivative commodities. When quantitative approaches are not applied to derivative commodities but qualitative approaches to strategic commodities in a limited period of the broadcasting time, more derivative commodities can be created even after the broadcasting of a drama is finished. Fourth, careful approaches should be applied to support for the production. This study found that great support for the production of a drama led to a success of the drama's derivative commodities. However, support for the production was never correlated to the audience rating. In other words, the audience rating had a basic impact on the success of derivative commodities but did not have any influence on support for the production. It implies that support for the production was not much effective in creating profits. This study conclusively suggests the above-said various possibilities, which of course have their own limits and insufficiencies, in the hope that they will somewhat contribute to the succeeding researches into the drama industry which is being progressed in Korea.
