The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of the diverse yard layout forms in the container terminal on terminal productivity. For this purpose, the researcher sampled some domestic container terminals being operated or planned currently, while setting as unit terminal the terminal occupied each by a berth, out of the container terminals of quadruple berths or 840 thousand ㎡ [1,400M (inside quay length) × 600M (terminal depth)]. In order to analyze the productivity depending on yard layout forms, a simulation technique was used, and in order to network the complicated functions of port handling system and their linkages, object-oriented models were programmed and thereby, the effects of yard layout forms on productivity were analyzed using the flexible simulation program. For the simulation analysis, the conditions and data for the simulation model were set/collected to be processed and reflected on the input conditions for simulation. In order to calculate some realistic values of the subject models during simulation processing, the researcher took into consideration the strategies for operation of the apron of the current container terminals as well as for operation of the yard parts. In addition, in order to suggest some criteria of judgement for actual harbor construction plans and designs, 15 scenarios for each yard layout form were conceived to be simulated. As a result of simulating the productivity, it was found that each layout form had certain characteristics of productivity. Namely, the larger the number of C/C increased per layout form, the terminal productivity fell more. Among three layout forms, the C/C productivity fell most rapidly for the vertical layout. As a result of analyzing the combined productivity of three models, it was disclosed that in case of the combined productivity of berth equipment, the horizontal layout of the indented berth was most productive, while the vertical layout was least productive. Particularly in the scenario where the difference of productivity amounted even to 6.6van/hour per C/C between the two layout forms, the vertical layout fell short of 551,992vans (827,988TEU) behind the horizontal layout. Namely, the more the containers should be handled, the difference was wider. In case of combined productivity of yard equipment, it was found that the horizontal layout of the indented berth was most productive. In view of productivity differences among yard equipment, the horizontal layout excelled the vertical layout as much as 3.6~4.9 van per hour. In addition, the more the number of C/C input equipments increased, the difference of productivity between the two yard layouts was narrower, which may be attributable to the possibility that a higher quantity of handling throughput would result in a more frequent yard equipment displacement on the horizontal layout. As a result of analyzing the combined productivity of the YT(Yard Truck), the productivity was similar between indented and parallel horizontal layouts, but the vertical layout was least productive because of its higher queue value on the yard. Particularly in the scenarios 1~10, the YT queue did not much differ among the three models, but as the quantity of handling throughput increased, the vertical layout resulted in a longer queue than the other two models. When the horizontal layout of parallel berth was compared with the horizontal layout of indented berth, it was found that the latter was favorable due to its shorter YT 'turn around time', but it showed a longer queue included in the turn around time, which suggests that it may be an economic model reducing the number of YT inputs. In conclusion, among the three models, the horizontal layout of indented berth showed the highest productivity in all scenarios, followed by the horizontal layout of parallel berth. The vertical layout of parallel berth was least productive, and its poor productivity worsened more as the quantity of handling throughput increases within the berth.
