This study investigated the pragmatic skills of children with hearing impairment focused on clarification behavior. Eighteen children with hearing impairment and eighteen normal children, matched by their chronological age(7, 9, 11), participated in this study. Within each group of 18 participants there were three pairs of 7-year-olds, three pairs of 9-year-olds, and three pairs of 11-year-olds. Participants were observed interacting in pairs who were well known to each other. Each pair of participants was asked to undertake 12 tasks, with one of them as the speaker for six tasks and the other as speakers for the matching six tasks. The participants were seated at the table opposite each other. One of the pair was designed speaker and the other the listener. Language samples from the sequences were audio and video-taped and transcribed for analysis. The children's responses were classified into four categories of requests for clarification and into five categories of conversational repair strategies, and the percent of occurrence of each category was calculated. The results obtained were as follows; 1. There were no significant differences among two groups in the number of requests for clarification and conversational repair strategies used by children with hearing impairment and normal children. 2. The proportions of specific request used by children with hearing impairment were significantly lower than those of the normal children. The proportions of general request used by children with hearing impairment was significantly higher than those of the normal children. 3. There was a significant difference among two groups in the proportions of minor repair strategy, repetition, confirming and no response except for major repair strategy. The proportions of confirming used by children with hearing impairment were significantly lower than those of the normal children. The proportions of minor repair strategy, repetition and no response used by children with hearing impairment was significantly higher than those of the normal children.
