There is an increasing number of lung cancer patients due to environmental issues and a greater number of smokers in the population. Many cases of lung cancer are not diagnosed until the disease has reached an advanced stage. For this reason, there are more health problems and a higher death rate associated with this disease than with some other cancers. For my study, I selected patients diagnosed with lung cancer at hospitals and treated using complementary and alternative therapies. In order to provide information for nurses treating these patients, I researched their experiences and attitudes about their treatment regimens. The method of this study was descriptive research of the experiences and attitudes of patients receiving complementary and alternative therapies for lung cancer. The research subjects were 120 lung cancer outpatients at a general hospital in City B. The study tool used was a questionnaire that consisted of 44 questions. The modified questionnaire relating to the experiences of patients receiving alternative therapies was developed by Kim Soon Hee (2003). The questionnaire relating to the attitudes of patients receiving complementary therapies, consisting of 17 questions, was developed by Son Hang Mi (2002). For the data analysis, the SPSS 12.0 program was used. It shows the actual number as well as the percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test, and AVOVA. Below are the results of this study: 1) The following are the traits of the research subjects: 73.3% were male; 45.8% were 60-69 years of age; 48.3% were Buddhist; 38.3% were high school graduates; 80% were jobless; 31.7% had a monthly income of 1,000,000-2,000,000 won; 47.5% were self-paying and 69.2% had no private cancer insurance; 65.8% had stopped smoking, and 61.7% had stopped drinking. Regarding the traits of the disease, 30% of the patients had been receiving treatment for less than 6 months after diagnosis of the disease. As an early symptom, 41.7% of patients reported coughing. 53.3% reported no metastasis to other organs; 30.0% were treated only with chemotherapy; 65.0% had been treated without surgery; 61.7% had received no chemotherapy; and 45.8% reported physical pain. 56.7% of patients reported general satisfaction with their treatment. Regarding the tissue types of the lung cancer, 49.2% was adenocarcinoma. 48.8% of patients had progressed to stage VI lung cancer. 2) 3.9% of patients in the study had used complementary and alternative therapies. A strong desire for a complete cure was cited by 62.8% of patients as a reason for choosing these therapies (this was the most common reason). Patients who started receiving complementary and alternative therapies immediately after being diagnosed with lung cancer accounted for 63.7% of subjects. 76.1% of subjects cited an expectation that these therapies would help effect a cure as a reason for choosing them. As the chief reason for choosing these therapies, most patients (61.1%) cited the recommendation of family members. 68.1% chose the therapies because of a belief that they would be effective in their cases. Regarding the effectiveness of the therapies, 61.1% believed the treatment regimens were helpful. 98.2% of patients reported no side effects from the therapies. 55.8% of the therapies analyzed in this study have not been proven by science. 46.9% of the patients mostly used various types of nutritional supplements as therapies. 85% of patients received both traditional hospital treatments and the alternative therapies analyzed in this study. 79.6% of the patients indicate a belief that combining these therapies with simultaneous hospital treatment is the most desirable option. Regarding the medicinal products used in these therapies, the most commonly used, at 86.7%, were Sang Whang mushrooms, which have been shown to be effective as a cancer treatment in Korea, followed by red ginseng and elm tree buds. 94.7% of patients reported no consultation with a nurse concerning the treatments. Because of the lack of consultation, 43.4% of patients felt that the treatments are unnecessary and have no place in a hospital treatment plan. 3) The research subjects' attitude concerning complementary and alternative therapy was statistically mean 3.56 ± 0.26 ( 1-5 degree ) which means relatively positive. 4) Among the traits of the subjects in this study, drinking ( F=4.12, P=0.019 ) and early symptom ( t=2.948, P=0.036 ) make no difference statistically. The results of this study, reported above, show that patients with lung cancer are highly interested in complementary and alternative therapies as well as western medicine. Therefore, we need to collect information or data on the complementary and alternative therapies that lung cancer patients are using and to organize this data in order to provide objective and reliable information on these therapies. I also think that we can provide and take advantage of basic nursing methods for lung cancer patients, based on nursing intervention, which will be developed along with the development and verification of complementary therapies.
