This case study is trying to present a long-term counseling process, which can give a child living in poverty or in a single-parent family a positive view of life and attitude. Based on developmental counseling theories, this process set its main goal to turn a child into growing up in sound and healthy through counseling. As detailed goals, the counseling is to make them pride in themselves, comfortable emotionally through a positive self-concept, being interested in learning and maintain a good personal relationship by learning communication skill with others. To fulfill these goals, regular counseling time was performed twice a week as well with parents once a month. the actual counseling process is classified by six stages as follows: - First stage, having empathy. - Second stage, having a habit of good communication. - Third stage, improving self-confidence. - Fourth stage, finding out academic enthusiasm. - Fifth stage, understanding others and having more altruism. - At last, sixth stage, having a time to share counseling experiences. Actually counseling session was proceeding based on S.O.A.P by Law, Moracco & Wilmarth(1981). It proves that a child have been changed more positively after long-term counseling process than otherwise. More specifically, remarkable changes have been appeared by them in terms of getting more positive self-concept, better relationship with friends, teachers and others and also more incentives to learn. Accordingly, this study shows how it is helpful to overcome maladjustment and how the professional counseling is effective to develop children. This case study is useful to provide professional counseling teachers in elementary school with an example for carrying out effective counseling activities.
