Although 70% of the land is covered with mountains in Korea, green zones are concentrated on mountainous areas and there are few green landscapes in urban areas. In this situation, afforestation in urban landscape cannot be forced to individuals, and afforestation by individuals has a limitation. Thus, governmental efforts are required to create afforested spaces.
Methods of creating afforested spaces through public efforts include the creating of neighborhood parks and green spaces, but it is hard to create such spaces in Korea due to the limited uses of the small?size and high?price land. The best work that the public can do for creating afforested spaces in Korea is street tree?planting.
Until now, priority was given to road widening to cope with the rapid urban industrialization, the expansion of urban population and the explosion of traffic. As the functionality of streets was overemphasized, the importance of roadside trees and street tree?planting has been neglected.
The present study surveyed the current state of roadside tree planting in Busan Metropolitan City. In the survey of street afforestation, we examined the species of roadside trees and street tree?planting by route in Busan City.
According to the result of surveying the current state of roadside tree?planting by route and district, problems in roadside trees in the city were as follows. Roadside trees were insufficient compared to other cities, and most of roadside trees were too common without distinction. In addition, most roads in the downtown did not have the median strip. Furthermore, environment for roadside tree planting was not adequate to grow trees including narrow sidewalks, and roadside trees were managed poorly without consideration of the characteristics and shape of the trees.
To solve these problems, the method of planting roadside trees should be improved, street facilities should be installed in a way of not hindering the growth of roadside trees, and protection facilities, and sidewalks should be installed in consideration of environment for the growth of roadside trees. Furthermore, institutional improvement is required for street tree?planting. Guidelines for roadside tree design, which have been applied uniformly, need to be diversified. For this, the relevant administrative authorities should promote well?planned effective urban afforestation in each area and street based on long?term plans. If residents are induced to participate from the planning stage, it will increase their interest in street tree?planting and have a significant effect on the protection and management of roadside trees planted with the investment of public budgets.
What is more, there should be measures to prevent damages on roadside trees from various aspects, and researches should be continued to improve road facilities as an effort to reduce damages on roadside trees.
