The aim of this study is to investigate the clinical nurses'' knowledge and practice on nursing intervention to relieve the pain in patients with cancer. The data was obtained through a questionnaire from 2nd March 2006 to 17th March 2006. The subjects of this study were 210 nurses who care the cancer patients in three general hospitals located in Seoul and Ansan City, Korea. The research instruments were constituted three parts; the items to identify the nurses'' general and pain related characteristics, the items to investigate the nurses'' knowledge and attitude on cancer pain , and the items to investigate the practice of pain intervention and the reason of practicing pain intervention . The data were analysed with SPSS version 12.0 for Windows. Descriptive analysis, frequency analyses, cluster analysis, ANOVA, and Duncan analysis were done. The results of this study are as follows 1. The correct responses for the general knowledge for pain, the knowledge for cancer patients'' pain, and the knowledge for direction of an analgesic drug are 68.8%, 84.4% and 55.3%, respectively. 2. Through the cluster analysis, subjects were classified into three groups; based on the general knowledge for pain, the knowledge for cancer patients'' pain, and the knowledge for direction of an analgesic drug. 3. For the general and pain related characteristics, there were significant difference on the duration of experience caring cancer patients, nursing unit characteristics ,and educational experience of pain among three group; high knowledge group, middle knowledge group and low knowledge group. 4. Upon the responses from nurses about pain assessment tools, the well-known pain scales are numerical scale and simple descriptive scale and frequently practiced scales for pain are the numerical scale and simple descriptive scale, and the most useful scale for pain assessment was numerical scale. 5. The frequently suggested pain interventions were administrating PRN analgesic medicine, and applying cold and hot therapy, and providing information. 6. There were significant difference on the knowledge about pain intervention; vibration therapy and menthol application, however, there was no significant difference on practicing pain interventions among three group; high knowledge group, middle knowledge group and low knowledge group. From the study, It is suggested that clinical nurses who care the cancer patients has to obtain the advanced education concerning knowledge regarding pain intervention and practicing pain alleviating modalities in clinical setting especially for cancer patients. It is also necessary the study to develop the sensitive tools to measure the pain knowledge of clinical nurses who care the cancer patients to identify the effect of pain education.
