Objective: Heart rate variability (HRV) has known to be the single most common risk factor for chronic heart diseases. This study was designed to determine work-related factors that affect HRV. Methods: During the period of December 2005 to February 2006, 94 male workers from an automobile factory were investigated. HRV (SA-2000E, Medicore, Korea) was recorded in the morning. Energy expenditure and upper limb workload were also estimated. Korean job stress questionnaire was applied to check job stress. Exposures for physical agents including noise and temperature, and chemical agents including metal fume were evaluated with reglular environmental monitoring data of 2004 to obtain the informations of hazardous agents in work environment. T-test analyses for univariate analysis and general linear model for multivariate analysis adjusting age and alcohol drinking habit were conducted using SAS Window version 9.1. Results: HRV was related with high strain for work demand and conflict. Statistically significant differences were founded in ambient temperature and noise exposure. Among chemicals, metal fumes and oxidative iron aerosols significantly affected to the ratio of Lf/Hf. Conclusions: Psychosocial stress, physical and chemical environment elements may affect to autonomic nerve system. Further evaluation about multiple factors and mutual actions in workplace are needed.
