Tire wear is one of the important factors that determine the tire life. Numerous studies have been performed to investigate the factors such as tire tread rubber, tire structure/pattern, vehicle, road environment and driving conditions affecting tire wear. Since these factors affect tire wear in complex fashion during tire service, it is not easy to clarify the tire wear phenomena. Tire wear test should be performed at real service conditions for the evaluation of tire wear. Accordingly, by evaluating tire wear through dedicated tests with predefined driving severities, the tire wear should be related to the tread rubber properties in accordance with the prescribed driving severity, thus leading to an optimal design of tire rubber and structure. Statistical modeling was performed for the die swell properties of tire rubber extrudates using Monsanto processability Test data monitored in the past. Each data was characterized by die swell characteristics obtained at each different shear rate in 4 zones. Univariate analyses were performed for the selection of proper variables and the determination of die swell characteristics. And then various statistical techniques such as partial correlation analysis, factor analysis and regression analysis have been performed. Independent variables for multicollinearity were simplified. Polynomial regression analysis and residual analysis were repeatedly applied. Finally model equations of 2 dependent variables - running die swell and relaxed die swell - with 71 independent variables such as raw materials and test conditions were obtained. Simulation system was built to predict die swell properties of rubber extrudates depending on the design of materials' ingredients and process c onditions by using the statistical model equations before actual test. Determination coefficients of regression models for die swell were 0.984 in running die swell and 0.981 in relaxed die swell. Error was below 10% in testing the prediction system. There are ‘Forecasting Results’, ‘Trend Analysis’ and ‘Result Analysis’ with Graphic User Interface (GUI) in this system in order to predict die swell. In order to build the physical property simulation system, ardness and tensile properties were selected as effective factors of the tire tread rubber. The correlation analysis and the 1^(st) order multiple regression analysis and 2^(nd) order polynomial regression analysis were performed by using IBM A/S software and SAS software for 58 actual factors and 6 variables of response such as hardness, tensile strength, modulus@50%, modulus@100%, modulus@200% and modulus@300%. There are 'Forecasting Results', 'Trend Analysis' and 'Result Analysis' with GUI in this system in order to predict physical properties suitable for the rubber compound design. As a result of regression modeling of tensile properties, coefficients of determination using A/S software were 0.89 to 0.94. The coefficients of determination for this regression model were high but it was the 1^(st) order regression model that could not apply alternate terms and power terms. For regression models using SAS software, determination coefficients of hardness, tensile strength, modulus@50%, modulus@100% and modulus@200% were 0.91 to 0.93 and that of modulus@300% was 0.81. Regression models using SAS software were possible to consider the interactions among factors because they were the 2^(nd) order regression models having alternate terms and power terms. By comparing experimental results with forecast results according to materials’ recipe and cure conditions, The errors of hardness, tensile strength, modulus@100%, modulus@200% and modulus@300% were 2.5%, 6.4%, 10.4%, 9.2% and 7.6% and the error of modulus@50% was 24% high. In order to predict tire wear behaviors according to driving severity, tire tread profile measuring device and analysis software were developed and the effect of driving severity such as driver and test courses were studied. Tire wear tests according to tire rubber properties were performed at the same driving severity by using the dedicated test method that is more severe than real driving conditions. The effect of driving habits on tire wear was simplified by fixing a test driver. The tire wear rates (or wear indices) were compared according to the test courses’ severities obtained by the lateral acceleration test. The wear tests of tires having different rubber properties were performed and their wear rates were compared. Driving severity of counterclockwise rotation was 1.285 times higher than that of clockwise rotation. In three test courses such as highway, highway + rural route 1 and highway + rural route 2, their driving severity numbers (DSN) were 1.05, 1.32 and 1.48. By comparing wear rates of four tires according to driving severity, it was possible to clarify them in low driving severity. In high driving severity D version containing 35phr BR and 75phr carbon black was the highest and the rest of three versions of tires were not appreciably different. There was a reversal point of wear rates between C version (SBR/S-SBR/BR = 20/60/20) and D version (S-SBR/BR = 65/35) at DSN = 1.32. There was a reversal point of wear rates among A version (SBR = 100), B version (SBR/S-SBR = 70/30) and C version (SBR/S-SBR/BR = 20/60/20) at DSN = 1.48. Dedicated tests were performed at DSN = 1.32 in order to compare 6 versions of tires according to rubber property. The differences of wear rates between center and shoulder parts of them were a little. Wear rate versus hardness and modulus@300% were positively correlated and wear rate versus tensile strength was negatively correlated. Coefficients of determination for hardness, modulus@300% and tensile strength were 0.63, 0.59 and 0.48. These test results can be provided for tire design guide to meet tire wear performance.
