Koreans had used knots in their everyday life since the prehistoric time, and the knots has been more decorative and magnificent as the society became affluent throught history. the demand of these knots, however, decreased after the age of enlightenment and the craftsman as well as the technique is disappearing. It will play an important roll to hand down our heritage by finding out the history of knots and studying Chinese knots, where the Korean Knots came from. In this study, I made the depth study of Korean Knots by studying the history and character of Chinese Knots and the history and character of korean Knots. The substance of this these includes finding out where the knots of Korea and China came from, and the how the knots had developed and used in both countries. For the study, I use various books and pictures for the research material. This study deals with the knots used as decoration, and does not deal with the Da-Hwae(the string to tie decorative Korean Knots), and Sul(the string hanging usually under the Knots for decoration) For the history of Korean and Chinese Knots, the basic knos, such as, Yeon-bong Mae-deum(Button Knot), An-kyung Mae-deum(Glasses Knot), Saeng-chok Mae-deum(Cloverleaf Knot), Jam-ja-ri Mae-deum(Dragonfly Knot), and Do-rae Mae-deum, appear earlier in China than Korea. But for the compound knot, such as, Ka-ji-bang-seok Mae-deum(Eggplant Floor Cushion Knot), and Na-bi Mae-deum(Butterfly Knot), they appear at the same time. In China, it´s Ching Dynasty and in Korea, it´s Joseon Dynasty. Some documentary records from the early Joseon Dynasty indicates that the decorative knots from that time has been made and use widely. Since the date these records were written is only about a hundred years from Goryeo Dynasty, we can presume the knots were used widely in Goryeo Dynasty, too. There are 16 kinds of Korean basic knots and 12 in Chinese basic knots. The compound knots are 20 kinds in Korea and 17 kinds in China. Korean compound knots are usually made with a little variation, small and simple. But there is more variation and the structure is more complicated in Chinese compound knots. For the colors of knots, Chinese knots use yellow, and red. Red, and blue, is usually used for Korean Knots, and Koreans used O-jung color. The O-jung color is red, blue, yellow, black, and white which means the activation and expansion of the world. Korean and Chinese Knots both used the animal form and the plant form in knots. The difference in the form of the two country is that Chinese use the form of letters such as 喜(happiness), and (living long), but Koreans don´t use the form of letters in Knots. They both are usually bilateral symmetry and the shape from the front is same as the shape from the back. The typical meanings of Korean and Chinese Knots are ´love connection, linving long, good luck, many children and etc. The exact meanings in every knots can differ from knots to knots, but the fact that they endowed some meanings to the knots and wished there hopes be accomplished by tying and carrying the knots is the same in both countries. Koreans used knots very widely in their clothes, accessories, household goods, and Buddhist ceremonies, but in China, it was usually used only in some mirror decoration and Bul-ja(Buddhist ceremonial stick). The Knots, came from China, has been used very widely in Goryeo Dynasty and it has developed into various compound knots in Joseon Dynasty which people used more extensively for variey use.
