Before starting their classes, teachers should grasp the appropriate locutions of each sex to enable their students to realize the accurate locutions of each sex. If this is done, students won't fall into the fallacy of making use of the opposite sex's locutions. If teachers make use of sitcoms and movies in their classes, they should have students speak English with the accurate locutions of each sex as shown on this thesis. The purpose of this thesis is to point out the differences between men and women's language in English. To determine their differences, first we had to survey the generative causes and characteristics in the different genderlects and 5 variations including interjections, intensifiers, hedges, questions, and tag questions among the vocabularies and grammars that sociolinguists have been researching and investigating. To prove that previous scholar's assertions have been found in acutal situations, we had to analyze the characteristics and utterance frequency of interjections, intensifiers, hedges, tag questions and questions in 35 episodes of the American sitcom "Friends" and 4 examples of American movies which primarily used everyday natural discourse. We sought to identify whether the results of the analyzed works were in accord with those of previous sociolinguists' studies. In the event that different results were seen, we tried to discover reason for the result. We discovered the following facts as a result of this research. Characteristics of male and female language have seen opposite results in some variations from those of previous studies through diachronic change. It was believed in sociolinguistic studies that women used more interjections, intensifiers, hedges, questions and tag questions than men did. However, my study shows that some variation such as hedges, questions and tag questions have been used more by men than women. Due to the changed circumstances from a male dominant society to a male and female society of equality, women have much more opportunity for education and social activity than before. This appears to be the biggest reason in reducing the language differences between male and female interlocutors. As a result, in these circumstances, women have been forced to learn and take on the men's way of speaking, as exemplified in greater strength, directness and confidence. On the contrary, men have moved closer to the speaking manner of women as reflected in increased politeness, softness and cautiousness. Therefore the characteristic differences between men's and women's ways of speaking have been greatly narrowed. However interjections and intensifiers continue to be used more by women than men and those variations seem to reflect a more feminine approach to speaking. This shows that the category of defining gender is still valid. The significance of this study is to discover the generative causes and characteristics of genderlects and how some variations have been used more by men than women unlike what has been seen in previous study.
