『L'Etranger』 of Albert Camus published in 1942 has created a great sensation in its content and form, and has been widely read throughout the world, and then has been under numerous many-sided studies. This study aims at interpreting the world of Albert Camus' consciousness through characters by approaching 『L'Etranger』 psychoanalytically. A hero in a literary work is writer's spiritual son, and writer's growth background, that is, environmental factors and personal experience in childhood, has an enormous influence over the formation of writer's inner world. The growth background of Albert Camus who was raised in poverty by a single mother affected the characters in the story and the formation of material images throughout the work. We could find the figure of Oedipus complex throughout the work as well as the process of solution and overcoming by analyzing and reviewing the image of father and mother through human and material factors in 『L'Etranger』 by a psychoanalytical approach. In the first chapter, an image of bad mother, which was formed through his mother and grandmother since he lost his father early, is analyzed based on 『L'Envers et l'Endroit』 and 『Carnets』 to understand how the image is projected to the relations among the characters in 『L'Etranger』. In the second chapter, an image of father and son standing in opposition in a figure of Oedipus complex is analyzed based on an image of his father who was an absentee to understand the representatives of father and son as castrator or castratee projected to the characters in 『L'Etranger』. In the third chapter, the murder caused by Meursault and the meaning of his death in the Oedipal conflict structure is suggested to analyze the solution of Oedipal conflict and the process of overcoming. We could understand the composition of story such as mother's death-sea-murder-Meursault's death and its meaning. The murder by Meursault, the core incident of 『L'Etranger』, is a feud between father and son, that is, the sun and Meursault, over mother according to a figure of Oedipus complex, and the murder is an overcoming of Oedipus complex, and Meursault's death caused by the murder is an ultimate point for regression to his mother, union with his mother and union with nature. Mother's death leads to the loss of maternal affection and finally results in a longing for overcoming maternal deficiency. Accordingly, the whole story of mother's death-murder-Meursault's death is a stage which could be overcome by the hero, beginning with Oedipus complex. Besides, we believe Albert Camus overcame painful memories about his mother through 『L'Etranger』. As Meursault imagined the image of benignant and merciful mother at the time of his death, Albert Camus might be free from pains, overcoming the image of bad mother that he had since his childhood through writing. It is considered that he regarded anxiety and silence in his childhood as a tonic of his writing, and literature played a part in sublimation so that he could be saved from pains. Meursault's peaceful mind and his sense of well-being could be considered as union with his mother, and this composition may be an important factor to see for studying other works of Albert Camus as well as 『L'Etranger』.
