Baek Seok is one of the most important poets of the 1930s in the history of Korean poetry. Appeared in the mid 1930s, Baek Seok is positioned at the very center of the contemporary political consciousness and critical consciousness of the history, since his poetry is filled with memories of the hometown, nomadic experience, and self-reflection. The purpose of this study is to comprehensively overview poetry of Baek Seok, focusing on his "hometown consciousness". The true meaning of the embodiment of "hometown" in his poems must be studied together with the object of his description. First and foremost, "hometown" in his poetry is a place where the traditional customs and daily life from the past are well preserved, and a peaceful space where the village people live a self-sufficient life as a community member based on the blood relation. In this perspective, several poetic themes of Baek Seok's poetry need to be examined first. The poetic perception subjects that can be classified into so-called "hometown" or "hometown consciousness" theme are examined in this study with a focus on space, sense, and femininity. First, space for a poet is a place where the poet's happy space consciousness is established and where the poet's self-defensive consciousness against the hostile world is established. Accordingly, the space consciousness revealed in poetry functions as a conscious space where the poet's inner world or world view is confirmed. Baek Seok embodies the world of archetypal experience lurked in the life of Korean people, by using the native, folk, and ethnic life as poetic subjects. The folk and native motifs appeared in his poetry become the basis of the consciousness which enables Korean people to overcome the harsh reality of the lost national identity and to realize the archetypal world of life. Second, his hometown is expressed through the senses. Embodiment through senses, especially taste and smell, is highly predominant in the poetry of Baek Seok. He explores the archetypal life full of vitality and energy which are contained in foods, by reflecting his memory of the childhood. His reflection of the childhood memory is an effort to recover the innocent life that was a perfect unity of self and the world. Third, his hometown is expressed through feminine images. The childhood space is a maternal space in which a fundamental archetype is preserved and no external conflict or deficiency is present. Thus, self-esteem and pride of the childhood are established mainly through the maternal influence of mother. The sense of fulfillment provided by maternal love significantly influences the inner self and becomes the source of happiness in the childhood. However, in the poetry of his later period, Baek Seok overcomes and transforms the maternal space. As he moves away from the maternal space, he is distressed by the sterile reality and sense of loss, and feels isolated as a poet who left his hometown. He tries to overcome the loss of community, that is the loss of his hometown, and makes a journey to pursue paternal love for settling in a solid place and a woman as an object of yearning. Pursuit of paternal love and yearning for a savior woman are the substitute for maternal love. Thus, it is to replace his desire of returning to the maternal space that was lost. The most significant meaning of Baek Seok's poetry is the confirmation of reality of the destroyed national ground, that is the loss of hometown, through a poetic space, and the presentation of the poetic world pursuing the recovery of hometown. It is interpreted as an awakening to replace the extremely constraint colonial society with the origin of communal life and solidarity. Further studies are to be made on the status and position of Baek Seok in the Korean literary history and on the degree of attachment of Baek Seok's works with the people's demand of the time. These are the tasks to be discussed by researchers.
