This study was designed to investigate the change of interpersonal relationship for a child with a single father through response-centered literature activities. Most of the previous studies on sociality of a single-parent child have focused on the effect of social capability through the child-adult activities or adult intervention, while they made light of the child-child interactions. In this study, thus, response-centered literature activities which are hypothesized to relate to the social development of the child were applied to the peer interaction of a child with a single father as well as the adult-child interaction. There were two major goals. The first was to reveal the changing phenomenon of a single -father child through response-centered literature activities. The second was to show the case of a single-father child with a difficulty in interacting with others to suggest some ideas to help her/him. The qualitative data were mainly collected by the participatory observation and interview with research participants. The participants consisted of 1 single-father child who had been offered a reduction of child care expenses, along with five children of the same age, a classroom teacher, and a social worker. The research was conducted from July 9th, 2005 to Feb. 24th, 2006. The researcher and research participants shared and discussed child's behaviors and documentaries. The results of this study were summarized as follows: 1. In the process of building relationship with peers, the changes in a single-father child were represented by: a change from anxiety and fear to acceptance and showing interest, expectation, hope, and building intimacy. 2. With experiences of response-centered literature activities. a subject of this study gradually learned the interpersonal skills, kept the peer relationship, expressing his/her own ideas actively, and finally suggested new ideas about playing. As the building of such a peer relationship progressed, the change within the subject was represented by a change from isolation to integration, such as 'discovering the isolated self', 'myself as a main character', 'self-portrait of myself', 'retrieved self', 'my drawing of a friend', 'my drawing of my family', and 'myself integrated in ourselves'. 3. In the process of response-centered literature activities, a subject got more deeply involved in the activities. Gradually the subject got involved in new activities and used strategies - describing/suggesting, requesting an agreement, and insisting - to perform his own role in the peer relationship. Findings suggested that response-centered literature activities have positive impacts on the development of interpersonal relationship of a single-father child and that other research participants, such as a classroom teacher and a social worker, play an important role. Further study may be designed to constantly observe parents as well as subjects in order to theorize helping mechanism and to develop programs based on response-centered activities, which would enhance interpersonal capability of single-parent children.
