In this study, through studying "SeoPoManPil" and "SeoPoJip" of Kim Man-joong's representative literary works which were written in Chinese characters, I have examined his view of literature and practical performances melted in his above-mentioned two works. The procedures of this study are as follows. First, to find out the creative writing background of "SeoPoManPil" and "SeoPoJip". Second, to examine the establishment of his view of literature through writing "SeoPoManPil". Third, to analyze his poems written in Chinese characters in "SeoPoJip". First, I have examined the contemporary environments which exerted much influence on his literature, in the personal aspects and the literary history aspects, Above all, when it comes to the personal aspects, the motherhood-compound mental state which was formed from the widowed mother and son relationships could be expressed abundantly throughout his literary works. With three times of his exile life, the feeling of longing for life, loneliness, the transience of life were expressed in various forms throughout his literary works. Watching the aspects of literary history, in the 17TH century in which he lived, with the tendency to emphasize antique sentence-oriented writing style, there was a lot of tendency to put much importance on the reactionism. The view of writing of writing to follow the Chu Hsi's style absolutely was widely spread at the times. Under those period circumstances, Kim Man-joong showed double-faced propensity of both the progressive view of value and conservative attitude. The results were that he left the formal-style literary work of "SeoPoJip" and the relatively informal-style literary work of "SeoPoManPil". Second, I have looked into the procedures how his characteristic view of literature could be established. Under the Confucian realistic situations of his time, due to his attitude of recognizing realty and critical mind to his period, he could insist on his own characteristic literary style. Those thought could be combined with his sense of beauty on which he could expand his inner world. Then, he could create his own characteristic literary works. He thought an inborn talent of art as the original resources of literary work creation, and put much emphasis on originality and creativity of a writer. Therefore, he excluded plagiarizing another persons' writings and blind imitation. With his thought of putting much emphasis on originality in the creation of literary works, revealing the literary thought of Cheon Gi Ron, he became a pioneer in constructing the new literary world in the 17TH century of Korea. Third, Seopo's characteristic theory can be seen in the two respects of Yeonjeong Seol (a kind of theory in which the expression of one's feeling is essential to poems) and the recognition of importance of national literature. First of all, examining Si Kyung Ron and his view of women, poetry and love which wereexpressed in "SeoPoManPil", his characteristic theoretical Yeonjeong Seol can be found. Furthermore, analyzing his poems written in Chinese characters after dividing his poems in the "SeoPoJip"into a subject matter, the expression methods and the subject and so on, it is found that the Seopo's Yeonjeong Seol come to be realized in the form of creative literal works. Meanwhile, his 'True Feeling-Oriented Literary Theory' was expressed and emphasized in the various parts of his "SeoPoManPil". The theory appeared as advanced aspects of the recognition of national literature in the progress of establishing characteristic theory. This is a revolutionary concept in the Chinese-character-written literary history. He thought that we should look at the literary works with critical mind. He came to realize that Korean-language-written poems in which our feeling could be expressed completely with the use of native language were indeed true literature. Especially, in his critic to "Songgang Gasa", I can find that his view of literary is amazing. He advocated for the value of novel in the high social position of Yang Ban and wrote the creative novels. That was possible because he was one of the highest intellectuals in his period, also he possessed critical intelligence and his own firm view for the world. The 17TH century in which Kim Man-joong lived was the first period of transiting from the middle ages to modern time. In the period of his time, the medieval literature and modern literature coexisted and struggled with each other. He accommodated himself to the literary changes which were happened inhis time and then became a pioneer for the next generation. Due to his reality recognition attitude and critical mind, He experienced political ups and downs in the turmoil of confused political situations. He was a successful writer, however, and opened the beginning of Silhak Theory through "SeoPoManPil". His poems written in Chinese characters in "SeoPoJip" appeared not to have reactionary tendency (those were different from the pomes written in Myung dynasty) but to have progressive character to develop the new spheresof poetry. After all, in "SeoPoManPil" and "SeoPoJip", I could find his abilities as the novelist who left immortal literary works in our country's novel history.
