The senile diseases are increasing along with the extension of average human life caused by the development of modern science and the elevation of the standard of life. Among those diseases, the dementia is become a social issue since it results in a loss of human rights and a deterioration of the quality of life. Diverse treatments have been known to remedy the dementia and the music therapy has been received a special attention among them. This study deals with the Korean traditional music programs to examine the changes of response and behavior of senile dementia patients. The process of music therapy consists of listening Korean traditional music, singing Korean traditional folk songs, playing Sogo and dancing with Korean traditional music. The subjects of this research were 8 senile dementia patients(4 male and 4 female, aged 77~86) who had been diagnosed MMSE-K 12~25 point(The Korean Version of Mini Mental Status Examination, 30-points scale), light to middle in dementia, and had been staying in the D geriatrics hospital. Music therapy program had been carried out 30 times once a week. Each session took 50 minutes and composed by the series of program such as; starting, listening, singing, playing a Sogo, practicing movements and closing. The changes of response and behavior were recorded by using paired t-test(significant level p<0.05) for analyses of the subjects. From these analyses, this research reached the conclusion as follows: First, senile dementia patients showed a high level of participation in the music therapy; Second, the music therapy created a positive change both cognitive and physical areas of the patients; Third, the music therapy can provide a positive change in the everyday life too. The results of this research suggest a new possibility that the diverse ways of Korean traditional music therapy for senile dementia patients in the field of music therapy will be developed in the near future.
