The purpose of this study was to examine creative movement-centered music therapy's possible impacts on the bodily expression and emotional state of elderly dementia patients. The subjects for this study were 5 elderly dementia patients of either sex aged between 69 and 77 attending the day care service program in a senior welfare service center located in Goyang-Si, Gyeonggi Province. This study was conducted from March 11, 2005 to May 13, 2005. During this period, 10 music therapy sessions were conducted once a week and each session was done for 30 minutes. In order to find out the change of bodily expression, I used a survey tool for physical expression ability which was made by Bae Hyun-suk (1990) and estimated the sessions through the video analysis. In order to find out the change of emotional state, I used a survey tool for activity and affect limitation which was made by Dooley (2002) and estimated music therapy activities' impacts on the emotions through the pre-test, creative movement-centered music therapy activities, and post-test. The results of this study were as follows. First, creative movement-centered music therapy activities had positive influences on elderly dementia patients' bodily expression. Though the pattern of improvement was different among elderly dementia patients, the whole score of a survey for physical expression ability through creative movement-centered music therapy activities increased. The minimum increase was 13% and maximum was 33%. Second, creative movement-centered music therapy activities were effective in changing elderly dementia patients' emotional state to positive. The whole score of a survey for emotional state change through creative movement-centered music therapy activities increased by 43.8% in positive items (pleasure, interest, contentment) and decreased by 43.0% in negative items (anger, anxiety, depression). In conclusion, through the creative movement-centered music therapy activities, elderly dementia patients could be free and creative to express their emotions which were difficult to find the words to describe and they could change their emotional state from negative to positive. And their surroundings also had influence on their emotional state. Therefore, in order to change their negative emotional state, continuing cure and careful concerns of their family and surroundings are necessary. In addition to creative movement-centered music therapy activities to change negative emotional state, more positive investigation about another cure activities should be done.
