This study investigated the preconceptions in work and energy of the middle school students and analyzed their misconceptions about them. Ninety nine girls of the middle school were divided into three groups and took lessons with three different types of learning : the traditional way of learning, the student-centered investigative learning through scientific experiments, and the planned learning for the change of conception. Before and after the lessons of three groups, this study examined both the effects and the duration of conceptualization. The first results of this study is many students had misconceptions in work and energy and misconceptions are caused by unscientific preconceptions.Secondly students don't have systematized concepts of mass, weight, gravity, force, work, power, energy, and mechanical energy.Thirdly when a student's daily experience and scientific concept were the same, his knowledge was increased much more after lessons. But when a student's daily experience and scientific concept weren't the same, his knowledge wasn't changed after lessons.Fourthly students who took the planned learning for the change of conception designed to understand the discrepancy between the misconception and the scientific conception through contrastive discussion and intellectual controversies have experienced more prominent changes toward scientific conception about the work and the energy than those who took either the traditional lesson or the investigative experiment-oriented lesson. Finally the planned learning for the change of conception is not more than the traditional way of learning and the student-centered investigative learning through scientific experiments effective in terms of duration of concepts. Therefore, before the lessons teachers must analyze the students' misconceptions and teachers must help students have scientific conceptions for themselves through various remedial learning models.
