What is the meaning of caring shown in the folktale picture books? 3. What is the caring thinking in Korean folktale picture books? The subject of analysis for this study is 74 volumes of folktale picture books published in 2000. In order to select the folktale picture book, the first stage is to select the series of complete collection to find various folktales, and at this time, the selection is made for the folktale picture book that is edited or recommended by the specialists in children’s literature or one that received the award related to children’ literature that the standard of “good” picture book for children is secured. Therefore, it has collected a total of 92 books including Korea’s Story Tales (2004) for 30 books that were edited by Choi Rae-ok, Park Wan-seo and Jung Chae-bong at Goryeowon, Korea’s Traditional Picture Books of Hansem.com (2004) of 20 volumes that received the grad prize for education, 24 Stories in the Korea Peninsula by Han Sang-soo (2006) and 18 Books of Our Ancient Stories by Sigong Junior (2006, recommended by Choi In-hak and Seo Jung-oh). For the second stage, from the 94 collected picture books, 74 picture books were selected as the final research subject picture books after excluding the picture books not containing the meaning of caring or caring thinking, or overlap the contents of the picture books. In order to analyze the caring subject shown on the 74 selected picture books, the type classification of emerging characters presented in the study of Choi, Woon-Sik and Kim, Ki-Chang (1998) had the amendment and supplement to fit into this research, and in order to analyze the meaning of caring, it used the classification of caring implication used in the Nodddings (1984, 1992) and Mok, Yong-Hae (2002) after amending and supplementing to fit for this study. The analysis of the aspect and property of the caring thinking is formed following the amended and supplemented system with the classification system used in the studies of Lipman (2003) and Jung, Yeon-Kyeong (2001). The following is the summarized result of this study. As the subject of caring, animal takes up 12.45% while supernatural things take up 6.95%. For the subject of caring for each age, adult was substantially higher than children; and in the event that human beings are the main characters, the adults were 67.44% that appeared for five times or more frequently compared to the children (13.2%). In the picture books for animal appearing as human, the subject of caring had the neutral gender with unknown age (10.1%) appeared in higher ratio than the adult (2.35%). This is attributable to the fact that the main characters who acted as the main subject of caring within the folktale picture book were adults that it is the result reaffirming that the subject of caring from the advance studies (Mayeroff, 1971; Gilligan, 1977; Noddings, 1984). Second, as a result of analyzing the meaning of caring appearing in 74 folktale picture book, the caring for self was 20.1% while the caring for other was shown to be 79.9%. As diverse as the characters and incidents in folktales, the caring for others showed 3.98 times more than the caring for self, and the personality of the subject is diversely composed. From the caring of others, the caring for intimate showed highest with 67.3%, and the caring for couple, friend, colleague, neighborhood, lover and other equal or horizontal relationship was 31.8% while the caring for the relationship with parent-child, adult-child, brother-sister, king-servant and the other unequal or vertical relationship had 35.5% that it showed more caring than the relationships with difference in age or personal status. From caring on others, the caring for strange or distant object was 23.4% while the caring for Animals/Plants/Earth showed the ratio of 9.3%. This is attributable to the fact that the meaning of caring in the folktale picture book handled the caring on others, and as the medium to indirectly experiment by the children together with the folktale picture books drawing the caring for self, the folktale picture book has the positive value as the teaching material for the children’s ethics education.
