This study has two purposes. The first purpose of this study is to examine the effects of anxiety control on social anxiety and social interaction of social phobics. The second goal was to examine how partners perceive social phobics and react with social phobics in neutral, cooperative and competitive social interaction. The participants are thirteen individuals with social phobia who meet DSM-Ⅳ criteria of social phobia and fourteen non-patients control group who are college students. All subjects were required to complete the Korean version of Social Avoidance and Distress Scale(SADS), Brief Fear of negative Evaluation Scale(BFNE), Social Interaction Anxiety Scale(SIAS), Social Phobia Scale(SPS), and Korean version of Anxiety Control Questionnaire(K-ACQ). The participants were asked to engage in a neutral conversation, cooperative game, and competitive game with an experimental confederate who was a stranger of the opposite sex for 5-min each(The experimental confederates consist of one woman and man and the participants did each game with one of them.). After three interactions, the experimental confederate rated the participants'' interpersonal behaviors using Korean Interpersonal Adjective Scale(KIAS). Both the experimental confederate and the participants were independently rated by six raters using KIAS and Social Interaction Role Play. Regression and one-way ANOVA analysis were conducted with SPSS 12.0 program. The results were as followings: First, regression analysis revealed that the anxiety control was the strong predictor of the social anxiety and it predicted negatively initiative behavior patterns and positively passive behavior patterns. Second, the partners of social interaction perceived that social phobic group are significantly less initiative and more passive than normal control group. Also, it was in neutral and competitive social interactions that partners interact with social phobic group more initiatively and less passively. However this result was not significant in cooperative social interaction. Findings from this study show that the anxiety control is important determinant of social phobia. It is also suggested the passive behavior patterns of social phobic group tend to elicit the initiative behavior patterns of other people.
