Measurement of residual stress by using photoelastic equipment in the injection molded part has been studied. The residual stressed are developed by force, pressure, temperature, and strain during molding process. Those residual stresses cause a part deformation after assembly, and it makes gap between parts. Thus the measuring and controlling of residual stresses are considered very important for molding quality of plastic parts. Through this study, the mechanism of formation of residual stresses has been reviewed and measurement of residual stresses using photoelastic equipment has been established. Transparent materials such as PC, PS, and PMMA were used in the experiment. The samples for the measurement of residual stresses were boxes without one side of wall and flat sheets. Operational condition was injection temperature. The residual stresses decreased as increasing injection temperature for PC. PS also showed that the residual stress decreased as increasing injection temperature. However, the residual stress difference according to the injection temperature was very small for PS. Birefringence patterns were observed as time goes after molding. The residual stresses were relaxed as time goes for PC. However, it was very difficult to recognize the residual stress relaxation in PS sample because the birefringence pattern in the PS was not much various for the injection temperature. The amount of birefringence in the PMMA sample was very small because PMMA has good optical property. The measuring technique of residual stress quantitatively has been constructed in flat PC sample using photelastic equipment. The results of measured residual stresses were compared with the results of hole-drilling method. Photoelastic equipment and hole-drilling method showed about 0.8 MPa and -5 to 5 MPa of residual stress respectively in the injection molded flat PC sample. Hole-drilling method may be involved errors during drilling however photoelastic equipment did not contain physical errors. Photoelastic equipment may contain errors in stress optical constant that strongly depends upon material and temperature history.
