H2SO4 (Sulfuric Acid) decomposition process which is sub-cycle of IS (Iodine-Sulfur) cycle as the most promising thermochemical hydrogen production method was studied. The target hydrogen production 1 mol/h H2 is accomplished with lab-scale atmospheric continuous process by combining unit operations of H2SO4 separation with 1.40 mol/h, H2SO4 condensation with 1.12mol/h, and H2SO4 decomposition with 1.63 mol/h H2 which is executed with 78% conversion at 8,598 ml/gcat.h. As a result of continuous operation of mentioned 3 unit processes, 0.98 mol/h H2 production is realized at atmospheric pressure. Novel Cu-Fe catalyst supported on the alumina is developed for H2SO4 decomposition which is operated at high temperature (~850℃) based on the consideration such as the durability at high temperature and high catalytic activity. The novel CuFeAlOx catalyst showed higher H2SO4 decomposition rate of 22.44 % than that of commercial 2CuO·Cr2O3, Pt/Al2O3(Pt:2 wt%) and Cr2O3/Al2O3(Cr2O3:19 wt%) catalysts at high temperature (>850℃). After lifetime test of the developed catalyst, CuFeAlOx catalyst is characterized compared to CuAlOx and FeAlOx to analyze the effect of Cu and Fe on the performance of H2SO4 decomposition with XRD, EDS, SEM. CuFeAlOx catalyst has the higher sulfur endurance than CuAlOx and higher H2SO4 decompostion rate than FeAlOx.
