Cholesterol is an important part of a healthy body because it is used to form cell membranes, some hormones and is needed for other functions. But hypercholesterolemia, a high level of cholesterol in the blood, is a major risk factor for coronary heart disease(CHD), which leads to heart attack. It was known that β-sitosterol inhibits the absorption of dietary and endogenously produced cholesterol from the small intestine, reducing blood cholesterol concentrations both in animal models and in humans. Flavonoids are most commonly known for their antioxidant activity. They also have been recognized for antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antiallergic, antimutagenic, antiviral, antineoplastic, anti-thrombotic, and vasodilatory activity. In this study, new phytosterol derivatives having flavonoid were synthesized as new cholesterol lowering candidates. The β-sitosterol-3-hemisuccinate ester was prepared by the reaction of β-sitosterol and succinic anhydride in toluene with a catalytic amount of DMAP. The β-sitosterol-3-hemisuccinate ester was activated by chlorination with SOCl2 and then finally the reaction of activated β-sitosterol-3-hemisuccinate ester with flavonoids in THF in the presence of prydine gave the new phytosterol-flavonoid conjugates in good yields.
