The elderly population increases rapidly due to improvement of living standards and development of medical technologies. Such a rapid increase of the elderly population causes a variety of the problems in our society, and the solutions to them should be found at the level of not just individuals or families but the society at large. The elderly welfare centers are classified into one of the elderly recreational welfare facilities. As of the end of December, 2006, a total of 152 elderly welfare centers are being operated throughout the nation. Since the Enforcement Regulation of Elderly Welfare Act was amended to increase the elderly welfare centers, it is expected that each of 260 cities, counties and wards will have an elderly welfare center by 2008. On the other hand, the elderly welfare centers are obliged to provide for such services specified by Elderly Welfare Act as counselling, health information, cultural and entertainment programs and other services required to enhance the elderly welfare. Namely, they need to maximize elderly users'' satisfaction by reflecting their needs. Such goals would be achieved only if the elderly welfare centers should assure their users of convenience and safety as well as the spaces for programs, while providing for the spaces designed to ensure their psychological stability and pleasure. The purpose of this study was to analyze the space designs for the elderly welfare centers both theoretically and empirically and thereupon, explore the ways to design the space associated with the programs based on users'' needs. For this purpose, the researcher sampled Seocho-gu Elderly Welfare Center for a case study to suggest the specific ways for the space design of elderly welfare centers. For this study, the researcher conducted a questionnaire survey for the elderly users of Seocho-gu Elderly Welfare Center. The data collected were analyzed using the SPSS 14.0. The results of this study can be summarized as follows;First, as a result of surveying elderly users'' demographic variables, life styles and recreation activities, it was found that many of them had higher academic backgrounds with higher monthly income level. Most of them were healthy, living with their spouses. On weekdays, they were engaged in hobbies or exercise or spending time at Elderly Center or Elderly College. For leisure, they were watching TV or listening to radio or reading newspapers or books, singing or performing musical instruments or doing exercises.Second, it was disclosed that most of the elderly users wanted to participate in such exercise programs conducive to health as gymnastics or sports dance, or such recreation activities as music or dance. They also wanted such programs as computing, weight training, welfare information, life counselling, job recruitment services and so on.Third, the basic programs operated by Seocho-gu Elderly Welfare Center were informal school, counselling and guide services, rejuvenation program, homecare services, job recruitment program and welfare and well-being program.Fourth, based on the results of the study, a space design for Seocho-gu Elderly Welfare Center was suggested in consideration of its basic programs. Specifically, the space design was intended to support such programs as recreation activities, rehabilitation and health programs for both slight and serious ill people, professional education programs for reemployment and life-long education and recess in an environmental-friendly space. This study can be concluded with the following suggestions;First, it is required of the elderly welfare centers to meet their elderly users'' diversified needs for recreational and other activities by expanding their facilities, specializing and networking their diverse services or programs.Second, in consideration that the elderly population will continue to increase as the society is aging, it is necessary for the elderly welfare centers to develop the programs reflecting their elderly users'' physical conditions and group culture, while providing for the spaces for such programs.Third, the elderly welfare centers are deemed obliged to provide for the daycare services for those elderly people ill too serious to move and establish special welfare centers separately for those ill serious or light.
