The purpose of this study is to determine protective factors which encourage the children of an alcoholic parent to adjust themselves to college life despite the situation of high risk caused by their parent’s alcoholism. In other word, I tried to confirm whether the protective factors play role of moderating between parent’s alcoholism and the children’s college adjustment, or not. For this study, I deduced the protective factors from the previous studies and examined if they have the moderating effects in reality, in the perspective of resilience, rather than the negative perspective that ACOAs cannot adjust themselves to college life. To observe the individual variations in ACOAs’ college adjustment according to the sub dimensions, I classified the college adjustment into full adjustment, academic adjustment, social adjustment, personal-emotional adjustment, and institutional attachment. The question posed by this study is: “Do the protective factors, on the eco-systemic level, play the role of buffering effect in the relation between an alcoholic parent and the college adjustment?” Participants in this study are 820 college students in Seoul and Gyeonggi province at the age between 18 and 27, among which ACOAs are 272. While the object of analysis includes the whole participants, in case of the grouping comparison of the moderating effect among ACOAs, the object includes only 272 ACOAs. As for examining tools, I used the followings as scales: SACQ, CAST-K, locus of control, spirituality, parental attachment, and social support. I rendered collected data into Descriptive analysis, Independent Sample T-test, Pearson’s Correlation, and Hierarchical Regression analysis, using SPSS WIN/12.0. As a result of analysis, it is revealed that the parent’s alcoholism carries negative effects on four dimensions of college adjustment(full adjustment, academic adjustment, personal-emotional adjustment, and institutional attachment) except social adjustment. And, I verified that, among the protective factors from the previous studies, the moderators buffering between parent’s alcoholism and college adjustment are spirituality, father attachment, and mother attachment. However, the locus of control and the social support, which are other protective factors, did not function as moderator. As I examined the differences among ACOAs groups concerning factors from which moderating effects were verified, only mother attachment showed difference in terms of college full adjustment. That is, ACOAs whose mother attachment degree is high relatively adjusted themselves better to their college life. The theoretical implications of the result of this study are: to evaluate ACOAs’ college adjustment using SACQ in a multidimensional way; to establish the protective factor from the ecosystem perspective to elucidate ACOAs’ resilience; to measure parental attachment respectively, as mother’s and father’s; and to suggest the accessibility to spirituality and the social work practice through the standard spirituality scale. The practical implications of the result are: to suggest the enforcement of Student Guidance Counseling Center for students who suffered special experiences during adolescence such as ACOAs, trauma, or dysfunction family —parent counseling and parenting education, improvement of parent-child relations, mentoring, spirituality development training, and etc; and to suggest programs for ACOAs and their family which can be executed in practical field such as community welfare center for enhancement of family function— programs for improving of parent-child relations, family communication, self-assertive training, and parenting role training and education, etc. The political implications of the result are: to demand the financial assignment for the program for ACOAs, since institutions for college ACOAs in community setting are rare; to provoke interests for ACOAs through the practical research of college ACOAs; and, in order to prevent ACOAs, to suggest the enactment of program for enhancing family function utilizing the alcohol counseling centers in communities. In following studies based upon this study, I expect the following projects: to elucidate the differences among the genders of ACOAs; to develop and apply the spirituality scale which does not conflict with cultural background; to study including late adolescents, who don’t go to college, in the same age as college student as a reference group; to enlarge the intervention of various variables encouraging college adjustment such as coping skill, self-esteem, humor, creativity, self-efficiency, academic achievement, parent-child relation, and social skill.
