Background&Purpose
Down's syndrome is the most common cause of mental retardation. About one third of individuals with moderate to severe mental retardation have Down's syndrome. It is a genetic disorder that is caused by a translocation, mosaicism or most commonly, a triplication of chromosome 21. The purpose of this study is to compare the features by the changes of oral cavity, pharynx cavity and vocal tract between normal children and children with down syndrome based on acoustic study when they speak and to apply to provide basic data for linguistic evaluation and establishment of medical care plan of children with down syndrome as examining their vacal features.
Methods
The speech sample of prolonged vowel is /a, e, i, o, u, ə, ш/. F1, F2, F3, pitch, energy, jitter, shimmer, mean F_(0), mean dB were evaluated for /a, e, i, o, u, ə, ш/. The ten children with Down syndrome and thirty normal children participated in this experiment. The mean age in children with Down syndrome was 9:6±2:4 years and 10:8±1:8 years for the normal children. A computerized speech lab. 4300B(CSL) was used to carry out the analysis of each voice sample.
Results
1. The children with Down's syndrome had the higher F1, F3, in comparison with normal children except /i, e/ in F2.
2. The children with Down's syndrome had the higher pitch, jitter, shimmer, Mean F_(0), in comparison with normal children.
3. The children with normal syndrome had the higher energy, Mean dB, in comparison with down syndrome children.
