Although the economic riches and advancement in science and technology have qualitatively improved our life, increased competition between individuals and organizations as a result of such development has also increased the stress level, a major source of daily fatigue and modern illnesses. Stress has become an essential part of the modern life, by making people worrisome and nervous in almost all the aspects of life, including the economic, social, political, emotional, and physical concerns. Because a human body is designed to survive based upon revitalization and restoration of the energy, it is best to seek for the ways to reduce stress levels in order to maintain a healthy life. Modern man is suffering from various illnesses deriving from stress, and innumerable ways to cure and or prevent stress-related illnesses have also been developed. The number of clinical institutes as well as medical practitioners has increased significantly in response to the rising interest in healthy lifestyles, and the popularization of many health techniques is also in its expansion. Also, as the fact that most illnesses are due to mental factors, rather than physical factors, has been demonstrated, preventative treatments that activate the inherent ability of the human body to prevent illnesses is getting much focus. As the side-effects and the invasiveness of many chemical treatments became known in the 20th century, re-evaluation of natural cures has also yielded changes of values, leading many alternative and natural methods of cure to be practiced on a more popular basis. Aromatherapy, using natural herbs, has become popular in such situation. The roles and benefits of aromatherapy are being recognized more fully now from a perspective for essential health management, and many magazines and newspapers have reported its benefits to reduce stress by relaxing the body. More countries participate in researching and developing the professional medical functions of aromatherapy, and the outcomes of such activities are already applied in practice. Aromatherapy as an alternative medicine provides a safe, pleasant, and effective treatment via massaging/absorption of scented oils and other supplementary methods using water temperature, moisture level, and body-warming. This study is aimed to approach stress, the major source of most modern illnesses, from a view of aromatherapy. First, this study plans to research the historical definition and causes of stress and physical changes it accompanies with it. Second, this study also intends to research and inquire into the theories of aromatherapy, including the historical definition and background of the scented oils, and their channels of distribution and special characteristics. Third, this study also plans to conduct a thorough investigation on the clinical experiments and documents relating to the usage of aromatherapy in stress management. Thus, this study aims at increasing professionalism of aromatherapy by suggesting the basic knowledge of aromatherapy based upon the research of the ingredients, reactions, and special properties of essential oils that are scientifically proven for the systemization of aromatherapy in stress management. Also, by comparing and contrasting the usage and demonstrated effects of pre-established aromatherapy, this study intends to provide basic data that contribute to more efficient, scientific ways of using aromatherapy. Although this study intends to provide basic information and increase professional ism of aromatherapy in stress management, there is a limit on this project that it is not capable of providing exact proofs for real clinical effects. Aromatherapy should be used for targeted purposes because the herbs used for it are various in its kinds and can produce different effects depending on individuals. However, aromatherapy is vulnerable to being misused or abused on the basis of insufficient knowledge, and the lack of enough experience of using it may lead to unintended side effects because of different physical constitutions, preferences, and purposes of individuals. Thus, when aromatherapeutic essential oils are used, scientific proofs that have been verified by clinical research and experiments are required for the efficient and effective usage of the treatment. That is why there needs to be an established set of professional knowledge and expertise in selecting and using essential oils for aromatherapy.
