Today the cell church movement spreads out throughout the whole world. What is important here is that in order for a movement to develop into a giant movement not through methodological progress but through the motivation and fundamental need worth the source should be the foundation. In this respect, the need of practical theological study of the cell church is very significant. In this circumstance the first purpose of this research is discussing on historical, biblical, theological levels that the essence of the church lies in its community, and that nothing more than community church can maintain the essence of the church, and by relating to the discussion, studying and proving with actual study experiment community of the cell church as a community church from the aspect of practical theology. The second purpose of the research regards the cause of loss of community which takes place in the existing traditional churches as institutional structure and theory of ecclesiastical oders, which is made to maintain it, and suggesting cell leadership for its alternative and proving the validity by biblical theological discussion and actual study on this. The study has selected the following research tasks to accomplish the above purposes. Task 1: What kinds of form and aspect has the community church taken historically? Task 2: What is a biblical theological principle of the community church? Task 3: What are strong points and weak points of various forms of modern community churches? Task 4: What are the principes and structures of the cell church as a new dynamic community? Task 5: What are processes and strategies of reformation for cell transformation? Task 6 : What are necessity and excellence of cell leadership? Task 7 : How is the community maintained which the cell church brings into the church ? The research has examined the causes of church growth and decline in the second chapter. Hoge (Dean R. Hoge)and Roozen (David A. Roozen) in the research thesis, “Understanding Church Growth & Decline : 1950-1978", edit and show varied religious sociological data on American church growth and decline. The data shows results of the research for a certain period of time shorter than thirty years, from 1950 to 1978, in American church history. This period of time presents circumstances in which American church growth and decline is clearly shown. This can be applied to the causes of Korean church growth and slowing for last thirty years from 1960 to 1990. The most fundamental, inclusive cause of the church decline or slowing has been considered loss of community. The third chapter has confirmed historical foundation of the community theory of the church on which the thesis is based. The existential peculiarity of the people of God has been shown by two big pictures of biblical or historical events in the frame of time. The one centers on an ecclesiastic, institutional organization while the other centers on a faith confession based community. The two types has been continued with ceaseless confliction in the history of the old and new testaments and in two thousand years of history of the church. Therefore the third chapter has confirmed the fact that the existential feature of the church is its community by examining biblical, historical scenes. As a result, the following conclusion has been made: First, the community church movement has raised against the church falling into institutionalism since the first church. Second, the community movement has recovered the essence of the church, 'believers' fellowship' and realized the radical discipleship. Third, the community movement has recovered the role and responsibility of believers that they should have taken, but that have been shaded and lost by institutionalism and by clericalism. Forth, most of the Christian communities have shown a devoted and holy life, which is remarkably separated from that of the secular society. Fifth, the members of many communities have practiced a life of sharing and serving among believers by seeking a community life or communal life. Sixth, Christian communities have had generally simple, practical structures. Seventh, most of the communities have been a spiritual treasury by maintaining deep spirituality. Eighth, Christian community movements as kind of reformation movement have been arisen inside and outside of the institutional authority. Ninth, a lot of community movements outside of the institutional authority have maintained historically up tp now. This suggests in some degree that the community movements outside of the institutional authority are more useful in maintaining their own identity than those inside of it Tenth, the main concern of Christian community movements has been recovery of the essence of the true church. The forth chapter has exhaustively discussed on biblical, theological principles of the communal theory of the church, and on modern alternative communityy churches. It has been confirmed by the Bible and a practical theological approach that the church is essentially a community, and that community is a biblical model which preserves the essence of the church best. First of all, communal aspects which the Bible shows have been presented largely into three things. That is, the teaching of 'the people of God' maintains identity of community. The lesson of 'the body of Christ' demonstrates joining of the community and its sense of members of the body, and the lesson of 'the temple of the Holy Spirit' demonstrates koinonia of community. This lesson has rationales for the community which can be maintained by doubtless evidence of the Bible. In addition, the Bible enables us to examine theological principles of the church as a community in many areas. We have the following essential factors to maintain the true community: Believers' fellowship, this provides them with the foundation of their life in the community. Theology of lay ministry, this is the greatest principle of ministry that institutional churches have lost. The aspects of the community, worship and serving, this shows the vertical relationship between God and people, and the horizontal relationship between people. Gift centered structure, this is a principle which shows what kind of primitive vulnerability the community should hold. Furthermore, this is a strong rationale for refusal of institutionalization. Practicing the radical discipleship, this demonstrates that the church is a community which is different from the world, being the most powerful practical principle that is necessary for strengthening community. On the other hand, the fourth chapter has examined many community churches and meetings which effect modern days as alternative models for the community. The strong points are as follows: first, the community shows the identity of Christian life; second, the community life is suitable for realizing the life of sharing and serving among believers as the body of Christ; third, the community church can prevent petrifaction or rigidity of organisms; fourth, community types can apply the church function most suitably and effectively. In addition, weak points of the community church can be summarized into four things: closed identity, prejudice which dogmatism and subjectivism of the leaders bring into the community church, unacceptability of the change of the times, and lack of historical consciousness The fifth chapter has examined the essential features and structural functions of the cell church as a community church, and dealt with the cell transformation according to them. As a result of discussion, the cell church is small group centered, and not just a small group but a structure in which the large group and a system that supports a large group and a small group operate together. In addition, the community features and ministry principles of the cell church as a basic community are summarized into four things. First, the cell by itself is a church. Second, all the members in the cell interdepend by using their spiritual gifts. Third, each cell serves each other for their needs, confirming their unity and joining by having the same vision and the same hope through large group meetings. Fourth, the church function in the cell enables the cell church to maintain community faithfully. The features of the cell church ministry realize what they are, the essence and feature of community of the theory of the community church, presenting the following strong points: 1. having flexibility 2 having fluidity 3. being inclusive 4. being personal 5. growing by division 6. being effective means of evangelism 7. needing the least professional leadership. 8. being applicable to institutional churches. In this respect, the cell church can be called sack of new ages which can complement the weak points of the institutional church and preserve the strong points of the community church. For transformation into the cell church, first of all, the process of reform is needed, and concrete strategies for transformation should be provided. The process of reform should reform suggestion of vision and consciousness of the essence of the church on the level of ideology, the cell leader should be produced through disciple training on the level of human resource, and administrative system and support system that are open should be provided on the level of structure. On the level of missiology the process of reproduction through new believers should arise. For the strategy for transformation into cell, situationalization, accepting those who have strong tendency toward the past stuff and the existing institution, raising exemplary small groups, balance and harmony between worship, and fellowship and witness of the gospel need to be provided. The sixth chapter has discussed on leadership of the community cell church. Especially this chapter has regarded institutionalization as a factor which causes rigidity of the church and dealt with church organization and leadership (ecclesiastic authority) as the most fundamental problem that deepens institutionalism. In addition, for the alternative leadership of the cell church has been suggested. Ministers of institutional churches have clerical authority, and under the institutional support, professional ministers or ordained officers (elders, deacons) take the most important administrative positions which decide the direction of the church on important matters and control the function of the church regardless of gifted functions. On the other hand, the community church which emphasizes gifted leadership emphasizes that the church should be a place for meeting God directly and a good pathway of grace through which God pours upon life and power. Moreover, whether what type it is, it is emphasized that the church should be a spiritual organism and community, and that the organization structure of the church should be fluid. In the cell community church the leader who leads a large group is set by natural recognition of leadership gift inside the church. Candidates for the lively leader are proved by much fruit of the ministry and recognized by producing many followers. Unlike charisma leadership which would lead a large group, the leader of a small group, that is, the leader of the cell does not have to have charismatic leadership essentially. What is the most important for the cell leader is leadership for serving instead. If another type of leadership is added, it is useful. However, the leadership which is the most necessary for the cell leader is that for serving. This is the most important character for all spiritual leaders of small groups The most necessary thing for a person who would lead a religious community is developing spiritual character. In relation to development of the leader's character or personality, at least three aspects should be emphasized. One is aspect of sincerity, another is that of obedience, and the other is that of gift of the word. Furthermore, education for the cell leader has fields of spiritual training and fields developing the skill of ministry, which should be noticed relating to development of personality. The seventh chapter has dealt the community church function of the cell church and demonstrative research on cell leadership. In this part, quantitative research through questionnaire has been proceeded on how the cell church can operate in its real situation, and on what type the result can be. Especially in here how much the church members satisfy after transformation into the cell church and whether the church function in the cell church maintains community and what feature the leadership style of the cell leader shows have been studied.
