This research is aimed at making in-depth analysis of principles and attributes of t’ai chi and contributing to expanding its user base by studying its developmental process into sports and life athletics through the time from the ancient China until the modern times. There are usually 5 branches of t’ai chi such as Jinshik, Yangshik,Ohshik, Mushik, Sonshik, among which, t’ai chi for life athletics , 42-form-based t’ai chin and Jinshik t’ai chi have been distributed in Korea. At present, t’ai chi has been turned into a pattern of charity professional competition entries and the level of t’ai chi has been further promoted with its high degree of difficulty in motion. This research made a comparison and analysis of the data specified in the domestic research paper and published literatures on it at a viewpoint of the fact that t’ai chi is a unique form of athletics for the health which is a principle of an ascetic’s hygiene. The principle and attributes of t’ai chi are as follows: As for the origin of t’ai chi, Jinwanjung is said to originate it as a discipline method for the state of non-self-nature by perceiving the essence of being a non-self-nature ascetic and many scholars give the most weight on Jinwangjung’s orgination of t’ai chi. In t’ai chi, Kwon, Gusu, and Jang are used as a hand using form and there are eight hand-using methods such as hitting, walking, seeing with eyes, moving body, letting it go, dongjung, euimu, oneness of mind and spirits which were intensively analyzed. Particularly, the most important thing in t’ai chi is natural breathing method, which must be done by t’ai chin trainees; the breathing method in t’ai chi is the top priority for trainees for their embodiment of accuracy in muscle contraction and motion relaxation such as naturally controlled breathing method, inhaling and exhaling breathing, motion and breathing, hypo-gastric breathing at getting-up, The combination of motion and breathing should not be done forcibly; t’ai chi is not an breathing exercise but a kind of martial arts. In doing t’ai chi, it’s a principle not to destroy the cooperative balance of motion and breathing. Turo is the same as breathing frequency and depth in disciplining it. The meaning of "empty upper body part and solid lower body part" in t’ai chi Chusu is that a trainee of t’ai chi should keep up the empty upper body part and active small intestinal part. T’ai chi can be said an exercise as well as martial arts to let all body parts not to stand idle once a trainee manages todiscipline his interior and exterior. At this state, there is no part in the whole body which isn’t in motion. And such a process makes a way of walking clear in emptiness and fullness and helps the mobility and flexibility of the joints and muscles of the intestinal organs, such as the heart and lungs. In addition, a trainee of t’ai chi should draw a motion with a strength of an inner spiritual idea and take a natural posture of easiness of right midriffs and fair balance of right midriffs. As for the attribute of t’ai chi, it has a hygienic, mentally healthy, Chinese aesthetic artistic attributes, which have been passed into the modern times and finally it can be trained with ease by everyone as life athletics due to its artistic value, revitalization of sports competition, and the traditional meaning as Oriental martial arts. The basic substance of martial arts lies in controlling one’s opponent as a means of a combative sport, but in modern times, its function as social sports is more valued. The Chinese martial arts has a historically inseparable relation with Beijing opera, acrobatic feats, and martial arts and t’ai chi’s mental ly intrinsic nature of aesthetics can be said to be a ideological ceremony and Taoist aesthetics had the most influence on the aesthetics of martial arts. In other words, the Taoist aesthetics caused the martial arts to imply internally philosophical meaning and mysterious beauty externally. The first research on t’ai chi was originated from the late 1930s. However, some argued that a lot more time should be devoted to understanding and researching the Chinese martial arts-t’ai chi and its historical backgrounds which once had been neglected.
