Submerged membrane separation systems integrated with powdered activated carbon (PAC) were used in this research to investigate the effect of PAC on the removal of organic matters, and evaluate the performance of the system. Flat-sheet and hollow-fiber membranes were used and compared in this hybrid system. Two types of systems were used in the experiment, submerged membrane configuration (System A) and submerged membrane integrated with PAC (System B). A synthetic raw water with compositions resembling that of a secondary effluent of a biologically treated sewage was prepared and treated. The PAC dosage used was 20 g/L. In a flat-sheet membrane hybrid system, Removals of TOC and UV_(254) were 55.2 and 71.7% for System-A and 70.6 and 82.4% for System-B, respectively. In a hollow-fiber membrane hybrid system, removals of TOC and UV254 were 72.2 and 79.9% for System-A and 79.8 and 92.1% for System-B, respectively. The duration of filtration was 48 days until the transmembrane pressure (TMP) of System A rose to 61 kPa in flat-sheet membrane system. For System-B, TMP did not increase appreciably throughout the experiment and reached 16 kPa at the end of 65 days. During an experimental period of 74 days in the hollow-fiber membrane system, the membrane in System A was cleaned six times when TMP increased to around 70 kPa, but the membrane of System B was cleaned only twice. It was found that the filtrate quality and the performance of the membrane systems were enhanced when PAC was introduced into them. The effect of PAC was more pronounced with the hollow-fiber membrane system than with the flat-sheet membrane system. While the flat-sheet membrane system did not foul as much as the hollow-fiber membrane system, and thus requirements for membrane replacement and cleaning would be less. This research showed that the filtrate quality and the performance efficiency were enhanced when PAC was introduced into the filtration system.
