The present study is divided into two parts; PARTI, Sinusoidal continuous permeation characteristics for submerged flat sheet membrane bioreactor and Part II, computational fluid dynamics for submerged flat sheet membrane bioreactor. First, in PART I, Sinusoidal continuous permeation characteristics for submerged flat sheet membrane bioreactor, the characteristics of the sinusoidal flux continuous operation (SFCO) was studied that can continuously produce treated water instead of the existing treated water controlling method used by membrane bioreactors (MBRs) in which run/stop (R/S) is repeated. Although membrane-fouling unavoidably occurs in the process of producing treated water in MBRs, it can be minimized by improving the operation method and it will lead to maintenance cost savings. Whereas treated water production is discontinuous in the R/S, the existing MBR operation method, the SFCO can continuously produce treated water thereby simplifying following processes and can be easily interlocked with other processes. This SFCO can be expressed as a numerical formula as J0(Asinn(ωt)+C). where, J0 refers to operation flux that determines wave amplitudes and lengths, n, A, and C refer to constants, and t refers to operation cycle time. First, the membrane fouling of MBR activated sludge was studied and the results were utilized in the analysis the operation characteristics of the SFCO. Considering the nature of MBRs that produce treated water constantly, constant flux complete blocking, standard blocking, intermediate blocking, incompressible cake and linear compressible cake fouling models were applied as membrane fouling models and according to the results, the linear compressible cake fouling model worked best. It is considered attributable to the fact that as the accumulated permeation volume increases, activated sludge is accumulated on the membrane surface and over permeation time, operation pressure increases so that cakes are gradually compressed. In addition, it could be identified that as operation flux increased, blocking coefficient, Kc also increased. The characteristics of the SFCO were examined using operation flux and the maximum/minimum peaks and operation cycle time of waves as variables. In the experiment conducted with various operation flux rates, whereas the SFCO had lower trans-membrane pressure (TMP) that the existing R/S at operation flux rates 20, 25, and 30 L/m2.hr that have critical operation flux regions, the SFCO had higher TMP at an operation flux rate of 35 L/m2.hr that does not have any critical operation flux region. In addition, with regard to blocking coefficient, Kc obtained to figure out the trend of TMP according to permeation volumes, whereas the SFCO showed lower values at operation flux rates 20, 25, and 30 L/m2.hr, the SFCO showed higher values than the R/S at an operation flux rate of 35 L/m2.hr. The SFCO control function is in the form of waves and has maximum/minimum peaks. These characteristics can affect membrane fouling. As the SFCO wave maximum peak increased, Kc values, reversible fouling, and irreversible fouling increased. When the SFCO wave minimum peak increased, whereas Kc values and reversible membrane fouling decreased, irreversible membrane fouling increased. When SFCO operation cycle time was increased to 10, 12, and 15 minutes, the SFCO showed lower TMP than the existing R/S and the Kc of TMP decreased as permeation volumes increased. Next, in PART II, computational fluid dynamics for submerged flat sheet membrane bioreactor, to design efficient submerged flat sheet membrane modules and reactors based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD), pressure-drag balance slip was applied as an aeration module and RANS (Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes) and k-ε(kinetic energy- dissipation) were applied as turbulence models and the CFD results were compared to liquid velocities actually measured in some sections. The models were applied to Lab, Bench, and pilot scale MBR. In the 3 dimensional cylindrical reaction tank numerically analyzed in the Lab-scale, from the speed distribution charts for the central cross section and water surface, it was identified that whereas the liquid velocity rapidly increased in the aeration diffuser and membrane module sections, it greatly decreased when the liquid passed the membrane module because drag resistance increased. The maximum liquid velocity appeared in the aeration diffuser and the inter-membrane. The liquid recycled up and down in the reactor and eddy currents existed between the left and right top of the membrane module and the free surface. This phenomenon became clearer as the aeration rate increased. On the membrane surface, shear stress appeared strongest at the bottom center and the shear stress increased as the aeration rate increased. In particular, shear stress increased the most when the aeration rate increased from 0.15 to 0.25 L/min. In the bench scale, the liquid velocity distribution, shear stress between the membranes and the buffle, and shear stress between the membranes were analyzed for a system to install two flat sheet membrane modules in an MBR and conduct aeration on the bottom. The diameter and liquid velocity of air bubbles that develop liquid velocity in the reactor were measured through image analysis and the results were applied to CFD. The shear stress between the membrane and the buffle showed relatively high values ranging from 0 to 0.1 Pa at the 1/3 point of the membrane module from the bottom and showed some high values at the top part of the membrane module. However, the shear stress between the membranes was formed relatively lower than the shear stress between the membrane and the buffle. This was judged to be disadvantageous in reducing contamination on the surface of the membranes where operation flux exists. In the pilot scale, an A2O MBR pilot that can treat 20tons per day was used. When applied to the pilot scale mod
