(Barratt Impulsiveness Scale: ...

The purpose of this study is to investigate the differences of aggression(AG) and impulsiveness(IP) in a group of murderers with or without antisocial personality disorder(ASPD). The 44 murderers of adult male and 41 normal adult males have participated in this study. All subjects performed the self-report Questionnaire that consists of Personality Disorder Questionnaire-4+(PDQ-4+), Aggression Questionnaire(AQ) and Barratt Impulsiveness Scale(BIS). Independent t-test has been conducted to analyse the differences between aggression and impulsiveness as well as Pearson correlation analysis to find out the relationship between the each scales. ANOVA and Post-hoc Scheffe were also conducted to measure the differences among the groups of the first, the second and more than the third offenders. ASAP scale of the group of murderers was significantly high compared to those of average males, where as AG and IP scales didn't show any significant difference. While 38% of the group of murderers satisfied the diagnosis of ASPD, those of with ASPD got more punishment in prison than the group of murderers without ASPD and more than a third offenders was also high. Furthermore, the group of murderers with ASPD showed significantly high rate in sub scales of AG such as physical aggression, verbal aggression, anger and hostility. Especially, as for the impulsiveness scale, motor impulsiveness scale was significantly high. When the group of murderers were divided into the groups of the first, the second, and more than the third offenders, the last group showed the highest rate in conduct disorder and anger scales compared to the others. Thus, the group of murderers with ASPD is likely to be more hostile to others and show much aggression for not being capable of controlling their anger compared to those of N-ASPD. Caused by their impulsive behaviors, they also tend not to follow the rules in a prison. Therefore, it is predicted they may be developed as persistent criminals. Since the subjects of this study is restricted to the adult male murderers only, it is not recommended to take it as the general personality trait of all criminals. For the follow-up studies to be more reliable in diagnosing the ASPD, it is required to ensure more even targets and use various instruments including a self-report questionnaire.
