The objective of this study is placed in examining college students’ prejudices on mental disorders, and helping mentally disordered people go back to the society by analyzing the elements of the prejudices. For achieving its goal, I’ve set the status of mentally disordered people, related policies, andthe actual condition of them as the range of its study, and look into the preceding studies on mentally disordered people. For research data, I’ve visited several universities where I’ve carried out a survey in person from 19 March 2007 to 30, and right after checking that the survey was finished, I collected questionnaire sheets. I’ve distributed 310 sheets and carried out the survey. I’ve collected 301 questionnaire sheets and used them for analyzing research data except for 9 sheets which were not collected. As the results of this study, first, of the subjects of the study, most of the subjects, 56.5%, answered that they had experience to do volunteer work, and the subjects who had a mentally disordered family member was 5.0%. Also, to the question about the experience to meet mentally disordered people 63.1% answered that they have, indicating the majority of them had met mentally disordered people. Second, the contents and levels of prejudices, the prejudices about mentally disordered patients was the highest, 57.1%, and 53.8% answered yes to the question that there should be a convalescent hospital to take care mentally disordered patients separately after leaving the hospital. And 49.8% answered yes to the question that mentally disordered people mustn’t get a driver’s license. The general level of the prejudices was not so high. Third, to the question about the effects of the prejudices on the understanding of mentally disordered patients, inthe result of analyzing the differences by sex, age, grade, military service, religion, and experience to meet a disordered person, there was no significant difference. Fourth, to the question on the understanding of the effects of the prejudices on disordered patients, 51.5% replied that it would affect their self-respect. And to other questions, most of the subjects thought that mentally disordered patients’ self-respect would be affected by other prejudices indicating that, generally, the subjects thought the effects of the prejudices on mentally disordered patients are very high. To the question about the understanding of the effects of the prejudices on the family members of mentally disordered patients, 57.8% answered that they would affect their family member in informing that they have a mentally disordered family member. In all questions about the effects of prejudices on the family members, the subjects answered that their effects are very high. Fifth, to the question about the elements of the prejudices, 56.8% chose reports of newspapers and newscasts on mentally disordered people. To the questions about mentally disordered people, they answered that they have a general influence, and to the question about prohibiting military service of mentally disordered people, they answered that they scarcely affect. Based on the result of the study, I want to present a few suggestions First, to remove the prejudices of college students on mentally disordered people, we have to analyze the elements of the prejudices, and studies on practical solutions are needed. Second, by analyzing the prejudices that mentally disordered people and their family members feel, we have to study on the polices to help mentally disordered people and their family members come back to the society.
