To improve the tear resistance of addition silicone rubber impression materials, various types of reinforcing fillers are added during the fabrication of impression materials. The fillers are also used to control the physical properties and to reduce the cost. The main fillers used in dentistry are crystalline quartz, diatomaceous earth, wollastonite, ground calcium carbonate, and fumed silica. The aim of this study was to improve the physical properties of addition silicone rubber impression materials by combined use of various types of fillers. Seven kinds of fillers having similar particle size distribution were used in this study, and the pH and morphology of the fillers were evaluated by pH meter and FE-SEM, respectively. Three types of silicone polymers [high-viscosity (65,000 cps, vinyl content 0.03 mmol/g), medium- viscosity (2,000 cps, vinyl content 0.08 mmol/g), and low-viscosity (200 cps, 0.25 mmol/g)] having terminal vinyl groups were blended. In the base paste, silicone polymer cross-linker (Si-H content of 4.3 mmol/g, 45 cps) and inhibitor having unsaturated alcohol group in vinylsilicone polymer were added in addition to silicone polymer and fillers. In catalyst paste, polydimethylsiloxane plasticizer was added to adjust its volume same as that of base paste, and liquid organoplatinum complex was used as catalyst. Formulated components were homogeneously blended with vacuum mixer. Fumed silica (FS), ground calcium carbonate (CC), stearic acid-coated ground calcium carbonate (CS), talc (TC), wollastonite (WO), crystalline quartz (QU), and diatomaceous earth (DE) were used in this study. To evaluate the combining effects of the fillers, single filler loading groups (FS20, CC, CS, TC, WO, QU, and DE groups) and combined filler loading groups (QU-FS, QU-CC, QU-CS, QU-TC, QU-WO, and QU-DE groups), in which 25% of QU was replaced with another type of filler, were designed. The other composition was same except the variation of filler. The size of the filler particles were 1.8~6.6 ㎛ in median value (average size of 2.2~7.9 ㎛) with similar particle size distribution, except for wollastonite group (median value of 8.0 ㎛, average value of 11.2 ㎛) and fumed silica group (primary particle size of 10~20 ㎜, aggregate particle length of 0.2~0.3 ㎛). In FS20 group, 20 parts of fumed silica (instead of 80 parts loading as in other filler groups) were added to 100 parts of silicone polymer, because nano-sized FS has very high surface area disabling enough filler loading without significant increase of viscosity. The consistency, tensile strength, maximum % strain, permanent deformation, and strain in compression were evaluated five times for each sample group, and viscosity, working and setting time using penetrometer were evaluated three times for each sample group. One-way ANOVA followed by Duncan's multiple range test for the results and the Spearman correlation analysis for pH versus working and setting times were performed. The results were as follow: 1. The working time of the groups showed in the order of DE and WO (30") < FS20 and TC (45") < CC and CS (75") < QU (175"), and setting time showed in the order of DE (90") < FS20 and WO (120") < TC (150") < CS (180") < CC (300") TC (187,379/ 217,539 cps) > CC (134,599/ 166,744 cps) > FS20 (90,471/ 73,747 cps) (p QU (40.95±0.69)≥ WO (40.78±1.30) > FS20 (37.76±0.45) ≥ CC (37.28±0.50) > TC (32.16±0.52) > DE (23.02±0.50). DE group showed the highest consistency which is in the level of putty body. The QU-TC and QU-DE groups showed significant decrease of consistency in comparison to TC and DE groups, respectively (p<0.05), and QU-DE groups showed rather lower consistency than that of QU-TC group (p QU (27.59±1.49) > TC (23.05±1027) ≥ FS20 (21.15±2.73) > WO (15.00±1.83) > CS (10.55±0.51) > CC (7.64± 0.16), which demonstrated that the tensile strength differs significantly by the type of filler (p QU-TC (33.23±2.70) ≥ QU-CS (30.46±1.35) ≥ QU-WO (29.99±3.91) ≥ QU-CC (28.70±1.45)]. QU-FS group showed the highest value. 6. The FS20 (343.48±45.93%) and QU-FS (304.49±41.70%) groups which contain fumed silica showed high maximum % strain, and CS group showed the highest value (363.10±78.22%) among single filler loading groups. DE group showed significantly lower maximum % strain value (21.49±6.57)(p<0.05). Combined filler loading groups showed a similar value of 200.24~215.97% except for QU-FS group which showed even higher value. 7. The DE group was not able to be tested for permanent deformation according to ISO specification due to its too rapid setting time, and WO (0.17±0.08%), QU (0.22±0.04%) and FS20 (0.21±0.07%) showed significantly lower value than those of other groups (p<0.05). By combining QU with CC, CS, and TC, the permanent deformation decreased significantly [QU-CC (0.48±0.03%), QU-CS (0.37±0.08%), QU-TC (0.55±0.12%)](p<0.05). 8. The DE group showed the most rigid characteristics even though it was not able to get the quantitative value of % strain in compression by ISO specification test due to too rapid setting time. The CC (5.73±0.04%), CS (5.83±0.08%) and QU (5.50±0.20%) groups showed significantly higher values of % strain in compression, and TC group showed the lowest value (3.11±0.16%) (p<0.05). The strain in compression could be regulated complementarily by combining fillers. From the results obtained, we found that the physical properties of addition silicone rubber impression materials changed significantly and that we can design a customized material with appropriate properties by combining fillers during formulation. It is considered that the results obtained in this study will provide guideline information for the manufacturing of elastomer impression materials.
