Wuthering Heights and the Absence of the Mother This dissertation examines the relationship between Catherine and Heathcliff, which constitutes the core of Emily Brontë''s Wuthering Heights, from the point of view of the ineluctable mutual-destructiveness resulting from ''the absence of the mother.'' The relationship between these two characters becomes comprehensible when regarded as an unconscious substitution on the part of the two characters for their relationship with their absent mothers. This approach may seem odd since Wuthering Heights deals with love, hate, revenge and reconciliation between the two families of Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange over two generations, but the absence of the mother goes a far way toward explaining what has been regarded by many readers and critics as an incomprehensible behaviour of the two enigmatic characters. Philip K. Wion, who applied the theory of separation-individuation of the infant from the mother advanced by psychoanalyst Margaret S. Mahler, has done pioneering work in this field. He analyzed not only Catherine and Heathcliff but the other characters of Wuthering Heights as well from the view of the psychology of the child in the absence of the mother. The basic point of Mahler''s theory is that an infant physically becomes an individual when it comes out of mother''s womb, but to be a whole individual, an infant must go through the psychological separation process from its mother which is not less momentous, and much more complex and gradual than the physical birth process. Furthermore, according to Mahler''s argument, just as an abnormal infant may be born if something goes wrong during pregnancy and birth, a person may have serious problems in the later life because of some particular obstacles during this psychological birth process. Finding Wion''s approach the most satisfactory in explaining and illuminating the behaviors of the characters, especially of Catherine and Heathcliff, I have tried to go deeper, putting the main focus on the ineluctable mutual-destructiveness of the relationship between Catherine and Heathcliff, and argued that their relationship shows precisely the crisis an infant feels during the rapprochement subphase under the separation-individuation phase. I have also tried to show, through the analysis of Lockwood''s two dreams, that Lockwood is not a mere reporter of the story as has traditionally been regarded but a narrator in his own right and has significant implications for the meaning of the whole novel. In the conclusion, I have argued that the difficulty of this psychological birth process holds the key to this novel because of the trauma Emily Bronte suffered at a very young age from the deaths of her mother and two elder sisters, and that this makes Wuthering Heightes both attractive and bewildering.
