The propose of this study is to analyze the actual conditions of career counseling, find out the problems in career counseling, and propose some ways to improve the career counseling method in academic middle & high school. To accomplish tthis purpose, 450 academic middle & high school students in Dajeon city are selected as the subjects of inquiries for this study. The inquiries are consist of 19 questions - 6 questions for the career counseling recognitions, 4 questions for the career choice problems, 6 questions for the career counseling problems, and 3 questions for the career counseling improvements in academic middle & high school. The frequence and percentage is calculated according to their school, school record, and parental school career. The findings are as follows: First: most of students still depend on the career counseling in school about the activities related to career like the standardized test and need the career counseling in school. However, they have negative thoughts to the career counseling in school, because the contents of career counseling In school do not give any practical help to them. Therefore, the career counseling in academic high school is carried out in the form of giving the practical help for the students and at the period needed not by teachers but by students to get the best effects. Second, when students choose their own career, the most difficult problem is the unreliability of their career goal. And many students search for the informations and materials for the career choice through their friends or senior, not the career counseling in school. Therefore, the teachers in charge of the career counseling in school have to convert their consciousness to play a role as a helper of the career choice who understands the students' characteristics and offers various informations and materials for the career choice to the students, with an idea that a student's career choice can change his life in the future. Third, the most serious problem of the career counseling in almost all academic middle & high schools is that over a half of students want to take counsel only about going on to university. According to this situation, because of the career counseling for entering university, the subject of the career counseling in school is naturally changing from a counselor to a homeroom teacher. now, homeroom teachers can not help Playing a role as a counselor. At the government level, It is time to expand the more opportunities of counseling training for the teachers and advance the teachers' quality and ability to counsel. Finally, to improve the quality of career counseling and the structure of counseling room in academic middle & high school, the counseling activity has to be carried out in the form of the counseling for the whole man by the professional counselor, and also the subject of career counseling has to be opened in curriculum in order to give an opportunity to exchange and search the informations, that are being guided only in the confined time called counseling, in the regular school hours.
