Step up and down

A step up and down DC-DC converter using digital control with high efficiency regardless of load current is proposed for portable applications.
The switching DC-DC converter using analog control was used for battery powered portable applications. But recently, researches about DC-DC converter using digital control are prevalent. Because digital control offers a number of advantage over analog control. It is less sensitive to noise and process variation and is more flexible in modifying the design for other applications.
There are three drawbacks of non-inverting buck-boost configuration which is used as conventional step up and down DC-DC converter. First, the buck-boost DC-DC converter using non-inverting configuration usually needs two more switches than other DC-DC converters, which reduces the efficiency due to the switch loss. Second, conventional CMOS switch used in non-inverting buck-boost DC-DC converter cannot provide DCM operation, which reduces the efficiency due to the conduction loss at light load. Third, the efficiency drops as the load current decreases.
To solve these problems, first, we propose a PFM/PWM buck-boost DC-DC converter with digital control which chooses a buck or boost mode using the duty information of digital control. Second, we propose a DCM CMOS switch which operates in DCM. Third, we propose automatic mode conversions between PFM and PWM according to the load current. So the efficiency of the proposed buck-boost DC-DC converter is maximum 95% and minimum 80% at the load current which has range of 10mA to 400mA.
In addition, a window ADC based on a single slope ADC scheme is also proposed for the small circuit area and low-power consumption.
