Adolescents not only go through big changes in their physical appearances and intellectually but also in their characters as they are influenced by their peer groups on their journey to adulthood. They are especially conscious of their appearance and try to develop their own look, grouping with others who also like a simular style. Although all age groups care about their appearance and style, it seems high school girls are even more sensitive to this issue. Korean high school girls spend most of their time at school and have to wear their school uniforms at all times while there. School uniforms help enhance their sense of belonging in the school, develop school pride, and save time and money by not having to have a full wardrobe. Though there are some down sides such as being commanding, uncomfortable and hindering their creativity, schools started to make students wear uniforms in 1886 and most schools still do. There have been many studies on school uniforms since they have become a common part of school life, but there aren't many studies about the school uniform as it has changed over the years in each style period. That's why I did this research. The subjects were high school girls from 11 schools in Kwangju and 8 schools in Jeollanam-do. I focused on fall-winter season uniforms and obtained graduation photo from school albums to use as my material. The following are the purposes of this research: First, to get the basic information for research on Kwangju and Jeonnam areas' school uniforms and how they have developed. Second, to investigate the actual conditions of the fall-winter uniforms in girls high schools in Kwangju and Jeonnam areas. Third, to form the basis images students pursue by investigating the different school uniform styles. The results by this research is as follows: 1. The change in items - During the first years of mandatory school uniforms, students wore a 3 piece uniform; a jacket, blouse and skirt. After the non-mandatory school uniform period where uniforms once again became mandatory, they wore a 4 piece uniform; a jacket, vest, blouse and skirt. This is the style that has continued so far. 2. The change in the uniforms form - From the 1960's to the non-mandatory uniform period, the X-line form was preferred and during the period when they became mandatory again, the H-line form was preferred. These days the preference is has gone back to the X-line form. 3. The change in jackets - Before the non-mandatory uniform period, the V-neckline or U-neckline without a collar, were popular and during the period when they became mandatory again, tailored jackets were popular. These days the tailored double button jacket is less popular and jackets without a collar are trendy again. 4. the change in skirts - Before the non-mandatory uniform period, students wore pleated skirts or flared skirts. During the period when they became mandatory again, more than 84% of students attending girls schools choose pleated skirts. 5. the change in vests - The 4 piece uniform, which was introduced in 1970, increased steadily in popularity during that period. During the period when they became mandatory again, students wore V-neckline double button or V-neckline single button with sweaters. 6. the change in blouses - Before the non-mandatory uniform period, the blouse had a coloured wide wing collar, shawl collar or flat collar in the past. During the period when they became mandatory again, blouses with a narrow collar or regular shirt collar were generally worn. The colors of blouses in the past were mostly white and continue to be so today. The subjects of this research were random samples from Kwangju and Jeollanam-do and therefore the results can't be generalized to the whole country. The standardized forms of the school uniforms in the past have changed a lot. It is considered that the changes in the school uniforms represent the students' various desires and progression of modern culture. New designs, colors and materials should be suggested to represent current trends and needs required of uniforms, within some guidelines so as not to lose the symbolism, function, economic efficiency and aesthetics of them.
