Recently, there are increased demands on high-quality images as hardware and computer graphic technologies have rapidly developed. However, RGB based color representation, which is the most widely used color representation method, does not measure the spectral reflectance of the scene surface more accurately than the fullspectrum based methods since it is based on the weighted sum of simple spectrums. Thus, the RGB based methods may not be suitable when harsh illumination condition exists, or the precise acquisition of the surface reflectance is required. Further, many vision tasks such as scene segmentation, or the recognition of materials within a scene, become considerably easier when it is possible to measure the spectral reflectance of scene surfaces. This thesis proposes a real-time system that produces high-quality multispectral video using a cluster of LED light sources with different spectra to illuminate the scene and a conventional RGB camera to acquire images. Given a set of illuminant color channels and camera color channels, the proposed system finds the minimum number of acquired images required to reconstruct the complete reflectance spectrum of each and every scene point. The system uses a model-based method for reconstructing the reflectance spectra of scene points using a small number of measurements. This model-based approach lies at the core of not just reconstruction stage but also optimization stage for selecting the spectral multiplexed illuminations. The system recovers a smooth but complete spectral reflectance function for each point. The feasibility of the proposed system is shown through the experimental results in various illumination conditions to illustrate the potentials of full-spectrum based method and its system.
