느린 악장의 조성은 빠른 악장인 제1악장의 관계조인 딸림조나 버금딸림조가 쓰이는데, op.2 no.1은 f단조에서 F장조로, op.2 no.3은 C장조에서 E장조로, op.13은 c단조에서 A♭장조로 관계조가 아닌 조성을 사용하는 경우도 있었다.

Beethoven composed thirty two piano sonatas during his entire life and he had three periods that can be divided into the first period, the middle period, and the last period. Each period shows his different musical style and expression. In this study, out of the piano sonatas written in Beethoven's early period, especially the sonatas op.2 no.1, op.2 no.3 and op.13, which are considered as one of his remarkable piano sonatas, will be focused and compared with one another. The musical features as seen in these early-period piano sonatas are discussed as follows: The Beethoven's early piano sonata is organized into not only three movements like the compositional style of Haydn or Mozart, but also even four movements. The first composition of his piano sonatas, op.2 no.1 is extended to four parts because minuet movement is added to three-movement sonata. The fast movement in all these sonatas has allegro sonata form. The sonatas op.2 no.3 and op.13 have larger scale than op.2 no.1. In op.2 no.3, there are used the magnificent and long Coda as well as improvised Cadenza. The sonata op.13 has distinctive features compared with other piano sonatas of this period since the slow introduction of Grave is used for the first time. In the sonata op.2 no.1, the number of phrases in the exposition, the development and the recapitulation section is quite even, however in op.2 no.3 and op.13, the development section is shorter than the exposition. The slow movement has Adagio tempo, sonata allegro form with omitted development section and Rondo form. The composition of the slow movement consists of the dominant key or the subdominant key, which is related key of the fast movement, the first movement. It can be also shown that not a related key is used, such as F Major for f minor in op.2 no.1, E Major for C Major in op.2 no.3 and A♭Major for c minor in op.13. The minuet movement or scherzo is used for the sonatas, which consist of four parts. op.2 no.1 and op.2 no.3 are in this case. The minuet movement is seen in op.2 no.1 and scherzo is replaced with minuet movement in op.2 no.3. Neither minuet nor scherzo is found in op.13, it has just three movements. The composition of op.2 no.1 and op.2 no.3 consists of f minor and C Major, which is the key of the fast movement, and F Major and a minor is used for Trio. The last movement with Prestissimo and Allegro tempo, is in sonata allegro form in op.2 no.1, Rondo sonata form in op.2 no.3 and Rondo form in op.13. The same key as its original key is used. In every movements, there can be recognized very different mood and the contrasting character between the first theme and the second theme, and between part A and B, the melody or the tone of the first movement is also used for other parts. For the harmony, the simple composition is usually used, such as primary triads. In dynamic, p, pp, ff, and f are seen, whereas mp and mf are never used. Moreover, sf and syncopations are seen often. There are more numbers of dynamics, which are used very diversely and differently compared with the works of Haydn, Mozart and Clementi. The musical techniques shown in the works of Clementi, such as fast octave, broken octave, octave tremolo, interval of the third and the sixth, broken chord, a succession of staccatos and long trill, are also found in the Beethoven's early piano sonatas. In brief, analyzing and comparing these Beethoven's early piano sonatas can identify and characterize the musical features of his early piano sonata. It also helps to perform the early piano sonata through studying the changes of expressions and it leads to the true understanding of its musical form.
